I live in a quiet, respectable area, the estate I live on is quiet with no through roads, only estate traffic. Parking isn't an issue really, except for weekends when friends & family come round, then the cul-de-sac can get busy, but nothing stupid.

Over the last few months, cars parked at the end of the road have been suffering from being keyed, someone broke off my rear reg plate, and various other acts of vandalism have taken place.....

Police are useless as expected, and who can blame them as there are speed traps that need to be set up to catch people going to work..

Anyway, I'm in need of a method of catching these cretins in the act, I'm thinking the best method would be a camera with a long life battery hidden somewhere, however my house is just too far away to be viable.

Any suggestions for a set up that could be left alone for a few days, plus decent quality to identify the offenders?

Brothers car has been keyed front to back down the drivers side last night, mega angry....

I have a similar dilemma, my car has been keyed whilst outside my house and my sister visited recently and also got keyed. I think I'm going to get CCTV.

Camera is the best bet. What about a 360 camera inside the vehicle?

Can you narrow down timings? Is it at night or after school etc? Is it consistently happening over a period of time, say a school holiday period?

Regarding cameras, would a basic cctv style system work maybe?

Sorry to hear about your plight though, that is nasty.

Overnight seems to be the main issue. Someone is doing it deliberately, methodically, as there is no reason for anyone to use the area of street where the cars are parked except for entering the cul-de-sac for the 6 properties in it.

got a similar issue, thing is how good does cctv need to be to make the police take action and make a conviction of it

chances are theyve got a hoodie on , then they could say they was just strolling past unless the camera catches the damages taking place

Why not sticker the car up descretely that it has cctv? Prevention is better than hoping the cctv identifies the culprit.

Prevention is definitely better, so identify and take a lump hammer to their knuckles so they can't hold anything to key cars in the future.

Are the cars parked near someone's house? If so, could they assist if you approach them. Explain the problem and ask if they would mind you placing a camera so it can capture the act. If they have a problem with this, then I would park somewhere else anyway!

What would you expect the police to do?
Perhaps they could set up an unmarked van full of the latest tech in surveillance somewhere nearby? A good old fashioned stake out?
Scramble the helicopters and have them on a relay to ensure your car is always in view?

Given that you only need to identify them and are not worried about the police, can it be assumed that you will be handing out your own version of justice?
Whilst I have smypathy that this is happening to your car, if you are the sort that is going to be giving someone a kicking for doing it, the chances are that its been done because you have already pissed someone off.

Get a camera installed, get it reported with the images you have.

I'm inclined to think it's the same person.
And that they are unhappy with the parking situation with blocking/obstruction of access to their property/not being able to park near their property due to what they consider to be inconsiderate and persistent parking by others.
May also find that others are equally fed up & are happy that someone is doing something about it so an investigation will fail as nobody will have seen anything.
Your camera idea is probably the best way forward - apart from parking elsewhere - but it will need to provide high quality images, something of the quality in the 'man with pram keys keys Aston Martin' that was on the web recently.

Could be as simple as the owner of the house that you park outside that is doing it? Some people get very protective of the bit of public road outside their house. Any reason you don't park outside your own house?

Thats what I was thinking, people find it to be a nuisance. Or if you are parked part on the pavement.

For a while I had a huge Mercedes Panel van parked outside my house, real eyesore, friend in the force said that it was owned by someone who had form and to leave it alone. Came home one day and it had been towed 1/4 mile away. Black 11s all the way from my house to the new parking spot.

This is probably the reason. If your not parking outside your own property your probably pissing others off as they can't park outside their property. People would prefer to show their annoyance like this than actually speak to each other!

Last year a guy who isn't a neighbour took to parking outside our house it pissed us off and I considered many options. In the end I had a word with him and he moved elsewhere.

Why aren't you parking outside / on your own property?

That would be my thought too.

It's either random acts of vandalism from kids or someone unhappy with where you're parking. Instead of rigging up a system to catch the culprit could you just park somewhere else? Like your house.

Is this a joke? You don't owns a piece of road just because it's outside your house.

People can park where they like on a public road.

I would set up a camera somewhere. I suspect it's a neighbour or something rather than YOOTDEMS.

Camera in the car probably not the best idea, you could try camping.

I'd avoid the police and make sure they can't use their hands after you find them... wink

Not a joke at all just offering a possible reason why the op is having his car keyed. An opinion many share. It annoys people if you park outside their house rather than your own.

Is it all residents or just cars linked to yourself?

As others have said sounds like someone being territorial.
