I've never seen nor heard of them before!

Wingtip vortices are an interesting topic, we've done some work at the Flight Science dept at liverpool uni in the past looking at the interaction between vortices from heavy aircraft and wind turbines with light aircraft, can be a serious problem as they can persist for a long time. I once wrote a program to numerically calculate the wingtip vortices using the Biot-Savart Law applied to aerodynamics, but these days I use CFD.

I presume you're part of Roy's little alcove of all things sim-related?

Not quite, I'm part of the research group for the Flight Science group upstairs. Plus having graduated five years ago, Roy never managed to snare me as the flight sim society didn't really get going till a few years ago.

I wish I had had a camera or phone with me but didn't want to go and get one as I could see that the contrail would soon disappear.

The one that I saw was very similar to the one in the first shot of the above link.
