Morning :-)

I am in need of a new set of rear tyres for my 2007 VXR8.

She is running Conti Sports on 20 inch GTS wheels at the moment, but I'm looking for a little more protection for the alloy as the current 275/30/20 profile of the conti's leaves the wheel quite exposed.

I don't want to compromise grip so not looking for budget, just a quality tyre that might help protect the wheel a little more than the conti's have done.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks :-)

I have the OEM Bridgestones on mine - they have a decent overlap off the rim to give some protection

If you're not looking for budget and don't want to compromise on grip, then the option I would recommend is Michelin Pilot Super Sport. I've used these for years now and they are excellent, awesome grip, and have rim protection. Not cheap though.

I understand that Michelin Pilot Super Sport are in the process of being superseded by Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, which according to reviews I've seem are even better still, though I haven't tried them myself yet.

Thanks for the feedback ☺

I do like the sound of the Michelins.

Has anyone got any experience of stepping up a size from 275 to 280/285? Just wondering if this might help my stretched tyre issue but not sure the 280/285 will fit.

I did take the car to my local tyre place to show them the issue but he didn't mention going up a width could help.

Will try and post a picture tomorrow of the rim/tyre issue, if I can remember how to post pictures!

Thanks.

I have 285 / 30's on mine and I still want more protection for the rims, when I have worn them out I am going for 285/35 or even 285/40

I noticed that the latest GTS has 275/35 and that had a lot more tyre than I have.
So my thoughts are step up the profile from 30 to 35 at least, and if you want to go to 285's that should be fine also.
Mine are Bridgestones.

Below is an image from the Oz HSV site showing the differences between 275/30 and 275/40

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for the extra feedback, here is a pic of how the alloy currently sticks out from the 275/30's I have on at the moment.

I am thinking of going wider 280 or 285 to help protect the wheel.

I will try and grab a couple of the photos of the Bridgestones - probably Friday now.

I thnik they should provide the protection needed.

Here's a table showing the rolling dia and % difference as you go up the tyre changes you are thinking off. These are quite big jumps, your top gear ratio is going to be upped by almost 8.5% if go for the biggest size.

Section A/R Wheel Dia Diff Diff %
285 30 20 26.73 0.00 0.00%
285 35 20 27.85 1.12 4.20%
285 40 20 28.98 2.24 8.39%

Thanks for the pic.

I've decided to try a set of the Bridgestones and stick to my current tyre size this time.

Really appreciate the comments, most people don't even know what the car is let alone what would be a good tyre choice!

You're screwing up your gear ratios. Are you taking this from the recommendation of someone you don't know, on the other side of the world or have you checked that the taller tyres won't foul anything?

If you really want more sidewall, drop down to a 19" wheel (if they will go over your calipers).

If you don't change the front as well you can also run into ABS and TPMS problems.
