Hi,

I'm after something that can be driven everyday if required but that will do approx 5k per day.

Budget 15k and want something pretty reliable.... what's the safest option? Not wanting borescore/engine failure worries.

I'm thinking boxster/Cayman/z4m but do like the idea of a Porsche!

From abit of reading I think the 3.4 engine is the worst?

Thanks for any help!

£10k 996? Keep the remaining £5k in the bank as that will pay for an engine rebuild if worst does happen wink

Alternatively Boxter is the cheapest Porsche sports car, so the newest one of them I would guess. Depends if you have a Porsche itch, or a 911 itch...

You haven't mentioned 911's so your £15k budget would buy you a decent Boxster & probably a decent Cayman.

Decent 996's are probably £12-15k if that did tempt you.

Thanks for the replies.

I would love a 911 but upkeep of the older car worries me.... my thought was a newer boxster or Cayman would be better in that respect.

If you only need 2 seats then it has to be a 987 Boxster S.

A cracking little car and superb fun.

Any additional upkeep (if any) should be offset by lack of depreciation, or in the case of a 996, possibly even appreciation.

How long do you expect it to last doing 1,800,000 miles per year?

My choice for £15k was an 07 Cayman 2.7. For the money there aren't a great amount of 3.4s to choose from at £15k, perhaps some early model high milers but the risk of engine failure was just too off-putting for me. I didn't want to be worrying and thinking about it every time I drove the car.

I think the 2.7 is excellent, it has the perfect amount of useable speed for A and B roads and revs and handles beautifully. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and more than good enough for fast cruising on the motorway. And importantly doesn't seem to suffer from the issues which affect the 3.4.

What are you driving now?

Maybe an early 987 3.2s Boxster would be a decent middle ground? i.e. it's not as likely to bore score, but has more torque than the revvy 2.7?

I've seen some 2009 caysters going for around 15k. You need to be happy in a 2.9 with potentially higher mileage. Then you can get into a P car with the later engine which is supposed to be much more reliable.
