out of a relationship with a bird who earned fairly decent money (approx £40k) but spent every penny, I'm damned if I knew where it went. She didn't pay for accommodation other then gas and electric (I own the home outright), I paid for meals out, and most holidays. If she didnt work she wasn't paid so it was always a bit iffy with holidays. I even had to bail her out a couple of times with large credit card bills.

You muster along, and a lot of the time it didn't matter that much, but now I'm out of it you realise certain things, travel is MUCH cheaper. I don't consider it paying double, I see it as more like triple or more, since they always want to stay somewhere nicer then I would and I had to pay. I can't say I minded that much, I liked showing her new things, and going to new places, but you do certainly notice it when you don't have to fork out so much. Holidays can be longer, flights better etc.

If you enjoy spending time with her, just consider it a cost of doing business and having her as company and don't begrudge it too much, the only thing to really keep an eye on is if she develops a sense of entitlement because feeding that will cost you. A lot.
That sounds like such a familiar tale that I had to check your location just to be sure you hadn't bumped into an ex of mine!

That's the trouble in my opinion. When people meet someone they love logic can go out of the window (for a few years) but not forever. Ask a divorced man about his ex and his finances and most will wish they never got married
Some married men wish they'd never got married too...

OP.

You know the answer here. Get a GF with a "similar" income to your own. Bin this st one off sooner rather than later!

Why?

Is she somehow completely incapable of getting a job that pays more, for some reason?
Not knowing the OP.

But I knew a girl like this. Lovely personality, (Heart of Gold type) and 2 marvellous tits. biggrin

But can't do basic admin jobs, currently does a zero hours, low skill job. She'll never get a decent job cause she's not capable. And she lacks the ambition to better herself. She'll be pregnant before shes 23 imo

'Never got married' is not quite the same as 'never got married to [insert name here]'...apparently a (perhaps surprisingly) high proportion of divorcees subsequently remarry.
if you get destroyed in a divorce and then remarry. You deserve to get screwed the second time round! laugh

Definition of Insanity!

o/p should stay single as it sounds like he can't cope with the principal that the money doesn't belong to an individual when you are in relationship.
Cuck!

Seriously, Man the fk up! Fricking White Knights!

A relationship is sharing your life with someone. Not becoming a provider for a dependent. That's children!

Sounds like you are the selfish one. Fly cattle class and she can come for less money. 3* not 5*. Job done.
FFS, sounds like she tries her limited best. If you are so flush, set her up with her own business. 5* hairdressing only, of course.
Brilliant idea. She's obviously not good enough to be paid more (and I saw a decent Hairdressers years ago and she was doing all right)

So let him spunk all his money into a business that will almost certainly fail (and that's not even because competition for women's hair is immense)

This is beginning to sound like one of those tedious threads about depreciation and whether you should buy a new or used car as against the pleasure of driving. In the end, if you want to qualify your prospective partner with an earnings requirement then set up an application form and say " Minimum income requirement is xx"...

I just don't get it. Yes, been through a divorce and all that. Still, in the end the only reason to be with someone is because you care enough to share a life with them.

Share.

I have been in modest circumstances and better, When it was necessary we split the tabs. When my career took off we did not. Not for one moment did I see the relationship in financial terms and of course the divorce as costly, but we had a son, and I wanted to ensure he had no diminution in his lifestyle, so had a few bare years. Met someone else, built a new career, made some money, no regrets.

All of the SWT stuff is complete BS to me. Most of the women I have cared about have been decent people. Some have made serious money, some nothing. It was completely irrelevant to me. What mattered was how I felt when I was in the relationship..

Still, if you believe its a financial decision and you find your partner is a drag on your desired first class lifestyle because you are too cheap to share, then by all means find a higher earner..

She is an experienced hairdresser but it only pays minimum wage and always will do.
Balls.

A friend of mine was a hairdresser. He started his own salon, which turned into a chain of three or four in central London, and he's now retired from that - he took his pilot's licence, and now flies commercial jets, while his missus (who started as a customer) runs the salons.
Spot on. Unless she's 70 what's stopping her taking further education or training in an sector that pays more?

OP....

Can I ask what this means if you are on a super high salary to support first class travel and 5* hotels?

I got a support role in IT straight out of university, after 2 years I was promoted to a consultant and 2 years after that a project manager (that was 2 years ago).

In all this time I have only ever received default 2-4% yearly salary increases (which everyone in the company gets), so I am not on much more than my starting figure 6 years ago (despite currently managing a $1 million project and €100k project simultaneously).
So your OH will never earn more than the national average, yet you got millions straight out of Uni despite only getting 2-4% yearly increases every year since you left Uni 6 years ago.

Can I work in the same place that is offering enough to pay for first class travel and 5* hotels all the time despite the bare minimum of salary increases over the last 6years?

You telling us porkies or you a trust fund kiddy?

I've done the maths and the new role is an extra £550 every month after tax, plus a performance bonus each month. A significant amount given I am a lower rate tax payer.
A little exaggeration going on somewhere?

Only on PH were you have a two-tier relationship based on income.

BTW, anyone who posts they fly first class should be able to find a girlfriend who does not work on minimum wage, i would suspect. Half term coming up, right?

And just to be clear, I am always in cattle class.
Looking at the OPs other posts I would be surprised if he is flying anywhere first class on the salary he states he earns.

So you are suggesting a lower rate tax payer cannot possible afford a first class ticket? I am surprised, given that it still means an earning of up to £45k.

Either way all of my comments remain true.

40k and going on about a girl not being good enough on her salary and first class air travel. These forums are absolutely incredible. Some people giving "advice" are somehow managing to be worse even. Truly impressive.

There's no way he's spening c.8% of his salary pre-tax on a flight!

We've done it twice and I wouldn't pay again ... business is much better value IMHO, however, last time we went 1st with Virgin was £3.4k each and the previous was £3.6k with BA (LA and Vegas respectively)

Unless he means 1st from London to Manchester/Edinburgh/Newcastle/etc... then it's only £330 return with BA LOL

Since you say ticket are you saying its not a flight but a train ticket? You never seem to say any more than ticket (no flight or anything else).

First class flights are only worth it if done on someone else's dime or a free upgrade from business class.
