Well just went for a spin to Morrisons and back in the 390SE. Came out of the village and into the first right hand corner and rear nearside wheel bearing gave a scream, a judder and the handling became somewhat interesting. Coasted to a halt and there's now about 2" of movement in the wheel in all directions and a very nasty grinding noise as I wobble it about. I drove over to Wales last Sunday in it without a squeak or grumble so surprised it went without warning. New bearing and also new UJ ordered and I'll get both changed at the same time. Hey ho.

Ouch, good luck with the repair Kieth, good job you wasn't at high speed i suppose.

I would have thought there would have been some warning?

You'll need a big socket for the hub nut!

At speed actually the wheel is remarkably stable due to the gyroscopic effect, its at low speed you really notice.

Would love to Glen but away the weekend at the caravan down near Tenby. 350i went to the office today and will do tomorrow. Thought I'd give the 390 a quick squirt. Anyway that's why I've got two - duty/standby for when one is broken!

Adam - I'll let my mate who is a technician/mechanic sort this one out. I'll just get the parts. He charged me £25 last time to change a rear bearing on the 350i and he has the large socket, press etc.

Bearing can fail strangely and quickly. My wife's car had started to made a bit of front end noise (sometimes) doing a slow turn into the driveway and going up over the ramp, I thought suspension squeak. I changed the brake pads and the front hub was rock solid. 3 weeks later I had a nail pulled out of the front tire and the hub was completely wobbly (1" or 2" of play) when in the air but solid to drive and no noise or clunking. And yes, I immediately changed the hub/bearing assembly.

What a PITA....Its best to replace in pairs, Does you mech mate know about NOT drilling the stub axle again but marking where the hole is, Might be worth getting a couple of new hub nuts...O/S can be a nyloc but N/S MUST be a castellated and only the collar needs drilling....(Most know this but just in case smile )

Most of the wheel bearings on our cars have probably been on there a while, The fronts seem to start making a rumbling noise and can sometimes be re-greased and tightened up a tad, Perhaps the rears can be felt through play rather than heard pre-failure??

I think we all need to check some of these parts more often....How many have checked their rear lower suspension bolts since mine and Adams snapped...Adams was the second person I knew of who's bolts had snapped and I had actually bought new ones soon after, I just forgot about it...frown

Im now going to jack mine up and see if there is any play in the wheels...I have had a rumbling but when I coast it goes away so I blame the exhaust...;)

Im so glad that in the time I have been a member of the Wedge fraternity no-one has ever been hurt in an incident where parts have failed...Most of the time I think we have been lucky.....

Thanks Mark - I've got two new pukka nyloc hub nuts which I've had in stock for some time. As far as I can see the existing nut has not been drilled and pinned so may well be the original. Car still only has 57k on the clock. Cheers.

My 350i is in the garage at the mo with a collasped rear bearing.. I've ordered some but Keith - what ones did you get if you dont mind me asking ?

It must be that time of year where everyone is out enjoying the cars..
As Mark has said.. check your wheels !!

Any links to castellated OR nyloc nuts for the rear hubs? I thought that TVR used some amusing thread for these which means they're PITA to get?

i got mine from Andy a few years back now.

Dom - wheel bearing kit I bought was from TVR Parts - we'll see what the quality is like. Last year for the 350i I bought the kit off RT Racing, so Richard also can supply them. Cheers

You will quite possibly find either the hub nut has come loose causing the inner races to part resulting in lots of play, or possibly in addition to this the hub nut has loosened causing the balls in the bearing to break like split peas, I seen both. Likely hood of huge instant bearing wear is slim to nil.

I made castellated nuts, sorted once and for all, before negative Normans chip in, the hole through the shaft is in the last 5mm, all the load bearing is well before that as the nylon or in this case castellations are in this portion, so it was never load bearing in the first place, they have been fitted for about 25 years now without issue. Also possible it has loosened due to the washer behind the nut deforming.

Castellated nut with D3 tool steel washer...

Hi

Yes I still have at least 6 sets of new drive shaft nuts left, and I will not be having any more made.

If anybody wants a set get in touch direct via the PH message system or via my e-mail address is you know it!
