Or what, you'll stone me to death? Throw me from the top of a mountain? Behead me while live streaming to the world? Beat up the women in my life who don't want to dress like Darth Vader?
I will respect Islam when Islam respects me, but given it goes against everything I stand for (peace, freedom, tolerance, you know the good things in life) I won't expect it to be anytime soon.
Are you sure you stand for tolerance?I will respect Islam when Islam respects me, but given it goes against everything I stand for (peace, freedom, tolerance, you know the good things in life) I won't expect it to be anytime soon.

Do you think any of those things should be tolerated?
Would you be OK with Islam if it didn't do any of those things? For example as a muslim I'm supposed toPray 5 times a day
Fast
Give to charity
Make the Haj pilgrimage
Accept that there is one true god.
Assuming i do the above would you be willing to "tolerate" my brand of Islam?
FWIW i think beheading/stoning is pretty abhorrent as does every muslim I know.

Again, a naive question... but what counts as the point where you can break the fast? Is it when the sun sets where you are (e.g. if you are in a valley the sun may set earlier than if you are up on a hill)... or an absolute time in your country? Ditto sunrise?
Seems in many cases to be down to arbitration, after all if you're living north of the Arctic circle waiting for sunset is going to be an effective, if unpleasant, form of suicide.Vaud said:

It's strange how, as a muslim, I've never asked any of these questions Ever since I've been doing it (40 years+) the local mosque has issued a timetable which we stick to the back of the fridge. If you compare mosque timetables for different latitudes they vary slightly (so London will be 10s of minutes ahead of Manchester) so i always assumed that there was a technical way that sunrise/sunset times could be calculated in advance. If you don't have a timetable then in muslim countries you listen out for the Azaan ("Call to prayer") for the maghrib namaaz which signified sunset.
Anyway, from memory (and I stand to be corrected), for fasting purposes it was sunrise when there was enough light to tell the difference in colour between a white thread and a black thread. Conversely it was sunset when you couldn't tell the difference in colour.
HTH and apologies for my patchy knowledge

Nobody forces anybody to fast. If you choose to do it you would probably choose what you thought was a reasonable methodology. You could always feed a poor person for a day instead.

Perhaps we should ask the watch forum why they are here also.
.
Yes Omega V Breitling threads have people shouting and screaming at each other don't they ,as soon as somebody starts a thread with religion or politics it turns into an unpleasant experience, best thing to do is not start them .

Or don't bother clicking on clearly titled threads you know will annoy you, that works just as well.Countdown said:

Can you answer a broadly related question? An old friend converted and spent some time in Malaysia with his inlaws. His wife's uncle was drinking (like a fish, his words) at a family party (outside of Ramadan)My friend expressed confusion, but his wife said that it was "sort of ok, but her Uncle's prayers would not be heard for 40 days"
Is this a fair approximation?

Have you ever travelled? I don't mean Spain or resorts. Have you ever left the UK? Again I'm reporting your posts. I hope PH understands that there is freedom of speech then there is inflammatory posts and pseudo racism. If I still see your posts over the next few days I might reconsider my continued membership of this forum. I will respect Islam when Islam respects me, but given it goes against everything I stand for (peace, freedom, tolerance, you know the good things in life) I won't expect it to be anytime soon.

What a load or nonsense. Starving yourself and rejecting your most basic instinct, especially for religious reasons.
I advise anyone that does it to see a mental health doctor.
And support for this cult given the recent attack In Manchester, shame on you.
I find it terribly sad that people like you have these blinkered opinions. I advise anyone that does it to see a mental health doctor.

I'm in Qatar with work at the moment and three of us were in a taxi just as the sun was setting. Suddenly the driver swerved to the side of the road where a group of men in robes were handing out little 'party' bags with water, dates and other goodies in them for tired drivers to break their fast.
I was rather touched when he gave three extra bags for the obviously-not-fasting white men sat in the car and said "for you, please enjoy them". Nice people!
Anyway, is this a standard practice in this neck of the woods? I've spent a lot of time in Muslim countries but never seen this before.
