Hi everyone,

I currently own a classic mini but I'm thinking of a change. I'll have a budget of around £6000 for the car and insurance. I'm 19 and am looking for something that's mostly just a lot of fun to drive, it doesn't have to be overly powerful, especially due to how ridiculously expensive insurance is. I've been looking at cars such as Mr2, ae86, e36, non turbo subarus, mk1 mx5's, celica, sierra, ford escorts mk1-4, ford capri, anything along those lines. I'm selling the mini due to me just wanting a change, I haven't got anything against it, I might actually keep it and just turn it into a track car eventually.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

£6k will get you into a Mk3 MX5. Plenty around so take your pick - if you can wait until Autumn then you will probably pick up a bargain.

As a year round driver I would go for the Roadster version with folding hard top - it's a coupe, it's a convertible, it's a coupe...

Lots of fun to drive. I took a 2.0l Sport version (soft top) around Thruxton a while ago and was having loads of fun undertaking Dodge Vipers, Ferrari etc on experience days.

Have you considered a clio 172/182?

You should be able to pick up a tidy example for that depending on mileage, everyone on here raves about them.

I'm 19 as well and insurance seems to be hit and miss so I'd run a few quotes on cars you're considering and make a shortlist. Drive as many on the short list as you can and decide what you like best.

I'd also look at: Fiesta ST (2L), Swift Sport, MX5, and if you're feeling brave a Nissan 200sx.

I considered a 200sx as I'd always loved silvias, but I commute every day so the age of the 200 discouraged me. From what I've read they are reliable when looked after properly, plus if you keep your mini it is available as a backup if work is being done to the 200.

I was quoted £500 less to insure a 200 than I currently pay for my Cooper S. Happy hunting! thumbup

EDIT: Celica GT4 is a good shout as well. Pretty much same story as the 200 with regards to insurance.

All good suggestions, thanks! I've looked at insurance on a 200sx, came out as just under £3k... A celica gt was around £1k.

My second car was an E46 318i Sport, 143 bhp or something. Classy, spacious and insurance companies think you're more, 'mature' because it's a BMW.

Great uncommonly thought of option if you ask me! Mine cost me £800 for my 3rd year of insurance, I'd been driving a 1.2 clio for the 2 years before.

Jeez, I was around the 1500 mark with 3 points. 1st Gen Audi TTs are aging quite well, not sure what insurance would be like though.

e46 and tt both sound good! I don't know why but when I put quotes in they seem to widly differ, for instance a 3l turbo supra was £3k to insure whilst a Subaru P1 was £9500! I have noticed that Bmw's are suprisingly cheap to insure. An E30 and E36 were both around £900, haven't looked at an E46 yet. But then with an E24 I was looking at about £4k! Then I looked at AE86s and Escort Mk3/4s and the AE86 was about £300 cheaper to insure than a 1.3 mk3 escort, I really don't understand the logic.
