Are you sure it's really being overused suddenly? I've noticed a phenomenon where when I first notice something, for example a rare car, an unusual tool or perhaps an obscure word, I then see that same thing several times shortly after. Or perhaps those things were always around but I hadn't noticed them previously. But now I seemingly see it everywhere. I'm sure there's a name for that phenomenon because I've heard other people describe it. But when it occurs with a word, it really does feel like people are suddenly overusing it.

In case this phenomenon doesn't have a name, I shall call it neopragmametacheírisi, which hopefully means new-thing-usage in Greek.

"Dying on that hill" is a phrase I've heard before on a few occasions in the past but I haven't heard it or seen it for a long while. The exact opposite of neopragmametacheírisi, so antineopragmametacheírisi
Frequency Illusion. smile

Not quite as snappy as neopragmametacheírisi, but I'll go with it!

Not a phrase but that pathetic, annoying, pointless thing where people make the heart shape with their fingers. I have no idea what it achieves, but it makes you look like a 3 year old girl.

to further annoy you and most people over 25, did you know that millennials do it one way, and that Gen Z do it a totally different way, and laugh at the millenials for outing themselves as being so old with the way they do it?

Really? The only variations I've seen is using just thumb and index or using thumb and all fingers....although that might be what you're referring to?

Either way it's unbearable. Major offender I can think of is Alisha Dixon on that talent show.

index + thumb = millennial
index + middle = gen z

The 'official' Gen-Z way is to use a curved index finger and a straight middle finger, with the thumb tucked out the way. Especially if you're doing the version where you make one half of the heart and invite someone else to complete the other half.

I suspect that this is 'official' only is as much as "someone big on TikTok declared it to be so to get clicks, then The Guardian covered it as news and now it exists". But I'm a millenial and I can't even get my fingers to comfortably go into that shape, so - on the extremely rare occasions where it is desired - I will continue to make my hand-hearts with the thumb and all the fingers. Presumably my fingers haven't been rendered flexible by a lifetime of iPad usage [shakes fist at cloud]

How on earth does that work, using just the index finger and middle finger (yes, I have just tried it, and yes, I did look like I suffered some form of degenerative condition)? Surely it's easier to use the thumb and index finger? Personally I blame Gareth Bale.

maybe you'd do better to aim that at the people who actually make the finger gestures, or judge how you should do them properly?

confused what's wrong with portmanteau? My great-grandfather's occupation, as recorded on my grandfather's wedding certificate, was 'Portmanteau maker'. smile

Apologies. That was supposed to be in response to one of the very early posts and was tongue in cheek.

Someone who complained about people using words like chillax…… splicing, two words together.

Someone emailed me and others earlier saying "shall we locked that in our diaries then?" referring to a possible meeting. I nearly vomitted.
