LBC under pressure to sack Nigel Farage over false on-air statements

  • Talk radio station forced to withdraw false Article 50 statement by the former UKIP leader.
  • A trailer for Farage's show was also quietly taken down after staff spotted what they judged to be another false statement.
  • LBC colleagues fear Farage could become the "next Hopkins".
  • Former UKIP leader is the subject of separate libel proceedings.
  • Farage denies making false claims on air.
---
Seems like Nige may be following Hopkins out the door. I doubt his criticism of GOSH over Charlie Gard will have helped his case too...

1)Put him in a sealed, wooden box, air hole optional
2) Load said box onto an incredibly slow Atlantic crossing
3) Ship him to his mate Donald, enriching our country in the process

I have LBC on quite a lot and whilst I don't agree with a lot of what he says I wouldn't have him down in the same category as Katie Hopkins.

I think he's walked a bit of a line on the GOSH stuff but for me it's more around how he seems to have taken a lot of info from their "spokesman" who it seems perhaps isn't and and who is/was a UKIP member or something (forget the exact details).

Tbh I assumed they just hired him on the slim off-chance one of his callers may be "Donald from Washington".

I wouldn't place him in the same bog of eternal stench I personally think Hopkins should be banished to either.
Rather I think he's gone a little too far using provably fake 'facts' though and get the feeling this is a warning from LBC to behave.

The establishment gradually regaining control of the narrative so decide they have nothing to fear from not pandering to him.
Would have made a great replacement for Jeremy Clarkson on TopGear but its on the bbc...

I bloody hope they keep him. It's good to have a few presenters that stir things up a bit whether you agree with them or not. Should have kept Katie Hopkins as well. Always good for a laugh.

Alternatively lets go the whole hog and get Matt Baker from the One Show. Guaranteed not to offend anyone ever apart from boring us all to death.

I have no problem with him staying on - he's making himself look stupid when he makes provably false claims though.

Not quite sure what the "false Article 50 statement" was.

As far as I can tell (didn't listen) Farage said:

Farage said:
The rights and obligations deriving from the Treaties would therefore extinguish.
In context, "Article 50 TEU: Withdrawal of a Member State from the EU" says:

Article 50 TEU said:
Under Article 50(3) TEU, the legal consequence of a withdrawal from the EU is the end of the application of the Treaties and the Protocols thereto in the state concerned from that point on. EU law ceases to apply in the state concerned, although any national acts adopted in implementation or transposition of EU law would remain valid until the national authorities decide to amend or repeal them. A withdrawal agreement would need to address the phasing - out of EU financial programmes and other EU norms. Experts agree that, in order to replace EU law, specifically in any field of exclusive EU competence, the withdrawing state would need to enact substantial new legislation and that, in any case, a complete isolation of the withdrawing state from the effects of the EU acquis would be impossible if there were to be a future relationship between the former Member State and the EU. The rights and obligations deriving from the Treaties would therefore extinguish, at least to the extent agreed between the EU and the withdrawing state. In addition, agreements between the EU and third countries or international organisations, for example on trade, would also cease to apply to the withdrawing state, and it would thus need to negotiate alternative arrangements.

Christ, is this another detour?
Farage is history, aim achieved with referendum - even said it myself many months back - but trolls like jjlynn27 still can't resist from comment.

As this is all about a radio station and some jumpy-up-and-down people trying to getting rid of one of its controversial hosts, having succeeded with one already, perhaps some more effort should be given to real worrying ste being spouted from some smaller radio stations, AND being allowed to!
At last, one has been found out. Wonder why it isn't in the national news? Perhaps it will be.

This one has been broadcasting amazingly for nearly 3 years. It has not sacked a presenter, or presenters, but it's just been closed down.
Very rightly so too!

Exactly. the document you linked to is a briefing on Article 50, not the actual agreement. That doesn't contain the statement Farage displayed. If you follow the link on the story I posted, it says:-

LBC said:
Nigel quoted a passage from what he said was in Article 50, which read: “The rights and obligations deriving from the Treaties would therefore extinguish”.

However, we can clarify that this passage is not from Article 50, but from a briefing note sent to MEPs in February 2016 to help explain Article 50.

That briefing note contains a disclaimer, which reads: “The content of this document is the sole responsibility of the author and any opinions expressed therein do not necessarily represent the official position of the European Parliament.”

Just noticed - the BBC published it a day before the local paper. Not sure they understand how covering up a story is meant to work..
