Anyone got one? If so what do you do about the worms that go through into the sump - is that ok? Can they get back up to the veges etc etc?

I haven't really noticed any worms getting into the sump of ours. I tend to only empty it once a year and only drain it every so often, so I'm not sure I would notice them in the sump anyway. After we have emptied we put a few sheets of paper in the bottom before we start to refill it again, I assume this is to stop things falling through.

maybe I need a few more layers of newspaper then ... its only a few weeks in so we're still on the first level.

In ours they recommended that you put newspaper over the bottom whilst building it up, this will eventually rot away by which time you'll have plenty of stuff in there and then the worms tend to stay where the food is i.e. the middle to the top. Our worms seem pretty good at climbing the sides anyway.

This is all well and good except that my missus insists on filling ours to the brim and then the worms somehow get killed off and we have to start over again, as well as needing to dispose of a wormery full of rotting vegetable scraps.

It's also a good idea to lob in a bit of torn up newspaper or cardboard from time to time to stop it getting too moist.

When they're working properly / efficiently they do a good job.

We're still on the first set of worms that it came with, so about 6 years in.

They are very efficient, we get good compost out every year. We also have a compost bins so we don't overload it, if that's possible. There is also some stuff you shouldn't put in there, citrus is one I believe.

Our first year was the least successful, we thought most of the worms had died and we would have to buy some more, but by the 2nd year they had started breeding and they have been going strong ever since.
