The reason why they have to give a health warning for cold weather (even without snow), is because cold air is dangerous for people with asthma
Tenuous. So is jogging but the NHS doesn't warn against it.

Hmm. May make you cough a bit more but "dangerous"? Come on.
Yes, it can be dangerous for those who have chronic breathing problems. I'm surprised, coming from Derbyshire, you're not aware of that given the mining history of the county.

Am I reading that chart correctly to say the NE of England is going to get some real snow and everywhere else is getting a few mm? I can't get excited about 6-7mm of snow, so disappointed frown
Predicted snow falls at 7 days are not accurate.

That's not really taking in to account 'lake effect snow' - anywhere east of the Pennines or across south central UK could get wallopped by a streamer.

Later on on Friday is showing possible snow that will make that chart look insignificant (for South England)
Now those words I do like smile

Interesting Met Office chart. This is one that has human input added to a computer created chart. The line going through the Channel Islands is a convergence zone. Winds bouncing off the south coast of UK and north coast of France expected to create a line of instability (in a warm climate creating thunderstorms).

What does this mean for the CIs? A massive line of snow-dumping clouds.

If you've got asthma your airways are restricted , cold air also restricts
them so going out in freezing conditions and gulping down freezing air is not a good idea.

Met Office have raised the cold warning to level 3: 'Severe Weather Action'

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/cold-w...
"This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action."

When a predictive weather service is permitted to give unqualified advice concerning health warnings you realise why the country's screwed when we get 4cm of snow in urban areas. Don't get me wrong I think given the uncertainty and inaccuracy of models it's quite brave to put yourself in the firing line and suggest a certain type of weather is likely, but ffs sake stick to that - the NHS looks after the nations' health and even that struggles to get it right.
Over 34,000 people died 'specifically' because of the cold last winter. Cold weather kills, usually caused by respiratory failure.

I'll assume you've never experienced a decent chest infection in conjunction with asthma then? wink

Proper asthma can be fatal without the added complication of freezing cold weather, as can a chest infection if you have a weak respiratory system.

This isn't remotely comparable to people going jogging confused

And on topic, just looking at this, my train journey Brighton to Liverpool on Wednesday and return Thursday PM has potential to be disrupted? Or do the biggest dumps look to be Tuesday and Friday?

But going jogging in sub zero conditions if your asthmatic isn't a good idea.

I'd say a small chance of disruption at the southern end on Tuesday (as things stand). Until Friday next week we're mostly looking at eastern disruption.

I'm flying LHR-EDI on Tues and EDI-LHR on Weds - bricking it!

I maintain that going jogging in any conditions isn't a good idea, asthmatic or not. wink

So can pollution, smoking, allergens etc etc. Met Office is totally unqualified in health related matters. TBH I think they've just taken some similarly hyperbolic NHS message and not cited it properly though.

My mate's dad died young of black lung. AFAIK there is no link between black lung and cold air but I'm no expert on the subject and don't really see a connection here?

Can you please take the hint, drop the argument and rants and move back to the discussion of electing members for the organising committee that will arrange the lynching of Puggit if it doesn't snow please.

Oh FGS

My point is the Met Office does not possess any qualifications that enable it to pass health information on to the wider public.
