Funeral Costs - How much??

I've just been given an "Estimate" for a funeral which I think seems extortionate!
All the next of kin are wanting is a very simple crematorium funeral, nothing fancy, nothing else, no flowers, simple, nothing, service, curtains close, kaboom, done.......... estimate is over £4k and only £850 is for the Crem fees!!
Does anyone have any experience of costs?

You could google for 'direct cremation', where the deceased is collected from wherever they are, shipped to the crem and cremated. No cars, ceremony etc but you're still looking at well over a grand, and it's not exactly 'personal'.
We cremated my Dad last year; funeral directors, 2 cars, bit of a ceremony and the necessaries at the crem and it was just about 3k. In the North-West, which is probably relevant (not least because the crem fee with service was £700, not your £850 ... I've taken a look and a crem without service is £380).

It is a lot of money, but it is a business like all others (except with a constant, never ending customer base 
)
I was blown away by the costs when we buried my grandad a few years back, the funeral director was driving a brand new Q7 too so it must be a good business to be in (apart from all the death obviously)
I've told my family I'd prefer a direct cremation, no drama, no cars, no expensive coffins, no makeup. Whether that gets done is another thing, not much can be done by me!

Cremation is £830.00 in Liverpool - £1050.00 for a fat person.Mum's funeral was earlier this year. Pretty basic and that was £3500. My Dad's was 10yrs ago using the same company and very similar arrangements that was £2000 although my Mum may well have beaten them down on price. The doctor fees, cremation etc had all gone up, but not that much. It was the funeral directors costs that had increased a lot - most items had doubled in price.

Ive told MrsSE, that should I pop my clogs before her, to just dispose of me as cheaply as possible... And spend the money she saves on a funeral, on something car related. A fair chunk of that cost was some specific extras (actor fees which were not too bad, and sign language interpreter which I thought was a tad expensive) - so think the basic cremation cost was probably between £2.5k and £3k.
To be fair, I thought the funeral director we used did a great job and earned their money.

Ive never understood all this Funeral malarky...
Driving the body in a herse slowly, in convening actual living people.
Family breaking their back carring the coffin into the chapel, im sure they fill them with concrete!

The really bizare prospect of spreading the ashes of a dead body..
Why not skip this, and go straight to the deceased favourite pub, with a couple of grand savings behind the bar....

For one thing, there wasn't a single hymn. There was however a man dressed in a basque, stockings and suspenders singing "I'm a sweet transvestite".
Funerals can be however the deceased wishes them to be.......

When you said "actor fees" above I assumed it had auto-corrected from Doctor!It's a slightly odd experience to leave your mum's funeral with plenty of photos and think : wish I'd taken a video. But it was exactly what she asked for!

And if you're an Irish family. The chaps seem duty bound somehow to get the spades out and backfill the grave. As fast as possible so as to be sure everyone is suitably impressed by their shovelling skillz. Driving the body in a herse slowly, in convening actual living people.

My old man's booked to donate his body to medical science - seriously. His local uni medical school will take the body, and cover all the costs. Once they've finished, it's disposed of properly - at their cost.
