As I’m sure most of you know, although the press on here seems to have been a little low key on it.

GM has sold off Vauxhall and Opel to PSA (Peugeot and Citroen).

What does this mean for future models??

As I’m sure many on here will deny, Vauxhall and Opel haven’t really produced much in the way of their own cars for a long long time. Mostly because GM had owned Vauxhall since 1925 and Opel since 1929. Meaning that most of the cars since then, or at least the post war ones have all had GM origins of some kind. And have often been sold under many different brands across the globe, including Pontiac, Holden, Buick, Chevrolet, etc.

One thing seems certain, it’s the end of the V8 Holden rebadged models for the UK.

And much of the Vauxhall/Opel range seems to be direct competitors to much of the Pug/Citroen range….. ???? So will this continue, or will PSA want to reposition their new acquisition? Or will we simply see Pugs with Vauxhall badges on?

Thoughts?

I doubt they will look like a Pug etc anymore than they do now. There has to be some platform sharing though otherwise why bother (as per VW / Skoda). Chances are though they will probably end up with the french engines.

It'd be the end of them if PSA hadn't bought Vauxhall/Opel anyway because Holden won't be building a V8 car anymore.

Now there's no car manufacturing in Austrailia (or due to cease soon) where will aussie cars get built, and will Holden even continue to exist?

508 badged as as Opel Insignia.
308 badged as an Opel Astra.

Suspect as previously stated Vauxhall will probably go as can't see PSA running 2 parallel brands like that.

I'd like to see Vauxhall retained as a performance brand for the GSI type cars. But I doubt it.

or maintain vauxhall as the brand for some countries as it carries a better reputation.

Not sure it does.

They will keep Opel rather than Vauxhall if they even bother. Vauxhall means nothing outside the UK.

Don't Vauxhall already have a badge engineered Peugeot? Is it the Mokka?

If I was a Vauxhall worker I wouldn't be too optimistic. I can see the brand remaining (it has presence in the UK market), but any 'production' in the UK will eventually become a token effort. Most models will be made by Opel, all the UK factory workers will be doing is prising off the Opel badges and replacing with Vauxhall ones.

Genuine question here - in which countries does Vauxhall have a good reputation?

I'd honestly opine that Ford (for example) has a miles better image than Vauxhall in the UK, despite being nip-and-tuck in terms of products.

Not sure PSA will get away with putting Ford badges on them though wink

Is this a thing? The 508 is a donkeys ages old thing and any AWD is via a lash-up of the old FWD with and electric motor on the rear wheels. A big part of the spend on Opel may have been access to the GM E2XX platform? Even the old Insignia may have been an improvement on the 508. I don't know what IP PSA got with their purchase.....or did they buy Opel to simply snuff out the brand and thus competition? That'd seem a bit short sighted.

I would have thought they will keep vauxhall as a brand but most likely will kill off certain models and focus on only the ones that sell in the UK. Hope the new insigina stays as that seems like a really nice car for the money.

I have a last gen astra for 3 years as a company car and it was decent, not amazing but not worth the abuse they get on here.

Corsa is 5th and Astra is 6th best selling car so far this year in the UK, which suggests people don't have an issue with them?

Granted, they sell a lot. But they sell on price, rather than 'reputation'.

Mine was a genuine question about whether there are markets where Vauxhall is seen differently to how it is seen here.

No provocation intended.

Perhaps, but I know a few people who like Vauxhall, and repeat buy because of it. Not price driven.

Genuine question - where else are Vauxhall's sold (as opposed to Opel)?

Nope, what's more likely is that PSA will supply engines and platforms to be clothed in Vauxhall panels, in the same vain that VAG products are built.

I know people who still will absolutely not buy a French car, those same people won't even know that a French company owns their 'UK' brand....

There's no reason for them to buy a brand to bin it off, they could just have waited for it to fizzle out on it's own rather than spending the money.
