I filled up the car from the Shell garage at Sanisbury in Christchurch last night and within a few miles the car was running like crap. Misfiring and wouldn't tickover. Is it possible to get bad petrol or is it just a coincidence?

It's quite possible, maybe check with the garage to see if anyone else has had problems?

My boy filled up the other day with unleaded which must have had some diesel in it as his car started smoking and oiling the plugs.

You cannot put a diesel pump in a petrol filler hole so, it must have been contaminated fuel.

In his case we had the fuel in the tank sucked out....

You may be surprised how many people do manage to do just this.

Has he checked his receipt to check that he did actually buy petrol ?

I bought Shell V-Power from a fuel station in Norwich last week. At the first set of traffic lights the revs died and the car stalled (an automatic). It ran very rough for a few days so I topped up the tank with fresh fuel and it is fine again. I strongly suspect a dodgy batch of fuel or maybe normal unleaded instead of 98.

Worth checking if the petrol station has just had the tanks cleaned as there could be water in the fuel which could cause the symptoms described.

A friend suffered this and basically had the fuel system in his car replaced because of the contamination, the bill for the petrol station insurer was north of £6k..
