Seems completely unnecessary not to press the button for them.

Yes it's a load of clap trap, but live and let live and all that.

I didn't know about it extended to things like lift buttons.

Seems just basic manners to offer to push the button for them.

It seems my post asking if the lift was made by a certain lift manufacturer was removed. Apologies if anyone was offended, I'm not the offending type. As you were.

I am offended by the Original Post, on the grounds that it starts an argument about religion.

In Israel, on the Sabbath, I was told that the lifts in Hotels simply stop at every floor. By the time you get to your room on the 44th floor, it's time to head back to Reception to check out.

I designed a lift controller as a project at university, and included a sabbath mode.

In a similar circumstance would you not just say "what floor, chaps?"

I think I would have just pressed the button for them, as pointless as I think it is that they wouldn't press it.

It wouldn't have taken any effort for me and it would have made things more pleasant for them.

Yeah probably.

But it’s an interesting one...

You could have pressed every floor after yours.

I'm sure I would have too but it does make you think perhaps we really shouldn't be entertaining such nonsense and through our actions encouraging its perpetuation. It's clearly an absolutely unbelievably stupid thing to believe and do so should we not be trying to remove such stupidity from our society by not entertaining it rather than being polite? Just a thought.

Honestly I'm no fan of religion but there's a point where I think people are clutching at straws to try and justify being unnecessarily rude.

Yes - you are right of course, but the devil in me wanted to know what they would do if I didn't. If they had asked me to, I would have, of course. Although I might have asked them why they couldn't.

Going off on a tangent a bit but this was doing the rounds on social media recently.

The lengths people go to in the name of religion.......

Two questions - what would they have done if I had been a bit quicker and the lift doors closed before they got the concierge to press their button, and - how did they take the lift down on the way out?
In respect of the second question, I expect they took the lift down before the Sabbath had come in.

Doubt it. Actually I bet they got their maid to do it. Doh!

What ^^^ said.

What has happened to simple good manners? How much does it cost you to just be nice? Pressing the relevant button has absolutely zero impact on your life but makes things easier for others. Them being devoutly Jewish has absolutely NO impact on yours and yet seemingly the OP resents it for some reason.

Sometimes I despair.
