Discussion
My Loake Edward have come to their end. Can't be resoled and now the uppers have started to die.
Been a lot less than impressed with Loake this time round so am trying not to buy another pair.
Thing is I have Shrek feet and need a G fitting and their shoes fit me perfectly. Can anyone please recommend an alternative that is close to the Edward but not a Loake please? Linky https://www.loake.co.uk/edward.html
Cheers

Pricey for Barkers.Having sold on my Tricker's, and also listed the £100 Cheaney's i bought a few pages back, I've been on the hunt for shoes.
Researching online materials (Styleforum etc), it seems clear to me that the best value to be had in 'mid-range' shoes currently comes from the Spain. Carmina (I was previously aware of), TLB and Cobbler Union all look like an excellent product, with features found only on more expensive British shoes (bark-tanned soles and such) like C&J handgrade, AS exclusive+, etc. Yanko seems similar but possibly slightly lower quality (at a lower price). I have also found that a Swedish retailer (Skolyx), who are well regarded on Styleforum, have recently launched their own line made by TLB that looks great value at 200 euro, with a very practical 'city' rubber sole.
Check out this for shoe porn, particularly sole porn, from Cobbler Union:
Luxury French calfskin (presumably Anonnay), with hand painted patina
Closed channel, fiddleback beveled waist soles
Full-grain calfskin lining limits
Quilted calfskin heel cup

they look nice, well until i saw the soles and now all i can think is a) falling down the stairs and probably falling over on any carpeted floor b) what happens when the soles get worn down? Can you just have the soles re-built up? Researching online materials (Styleforum etc), it seems clear to me that the best value to be had in 'mid-range' shoes currently comes from the Spain. Fiddleback (always) sole looks great. It'll be interesting to see how it wears with the 'wood look' finish. Quilted insole is quite a novelty!
Only the heel cup of the insole is 'quilted'. The rest is 'normal' leather.Seems a bit over the top, but it's across all of their shoe styles that I have seen.

Mine couldn't fit better or be more comfortable to walk in if they had been made for me.
Why mess with perfection?

Not for me tbh. As Goaty mentions above, they're more his kinda thing. That's not to say I don't like two tones, but my Joseph Cheaney pair aren't quite as exciting.
