Polar Bears, despite being fast, powerful and very aggressive predators, have never succeeded in catching and eating a penguin.

Complete bks. I can see what you're trying to get at.....but you're way off!
Ah well, I can't always be right. I genuinely thought that. Is there any truth, EG maybe unlikely, highly likely, their dominant gene? Cant seem to find what I want on Google?

I've got one! I've got one!

It is well known that if you walk one mile south, then one mile east, then one mile north, and you find yourself back where you started, that you are at the North Pole, yes?

Well, what is a Astonishing Fact is that the above is completely wrong and there are in (astonishing) fact an infinite number of places on earth where the exact same thing applies - you find yourself in the same spot that your started having walked one mile south, then one mile east, then one mile north.

Surely you are still one mile east of where you started?

I'm guessing it's one of those silly things due to the earth spin/pole weird st but I can tell you now that if I left my house and followed your instructions I'd be a mile from home. Likely with the police chasing me from walking through all the gardens and climbing over the houses of my neighbours so maybe the police give me a lift home.

Nope, you end up exactly where you started and no funny business about space / time or whatever, just basic geometry. It does not work everywhere on earth, like your house, but there are still an infinite number of places where it does work.

Then this opens up the argument about magnetic north, true north and relative north doesn't it? Or some other such silliness.

Didn't believe that so looked it up. Logical but yes, initially astonishing. First allied ace is down in number 231!

No, nothing to do with that. Just basic 11-plus geometry.

Nope, I just put a dot on a piece of paper, drew a line 1cm down, 1cm right then 1cm up. It doesn't join the dot. I even moved it to a few places in the room and nothing changed. I suspect beyond me being late for work and having serious frost bite it would still be the same if I took it to the North Pole.

In 'Zulu' Michael Caine never said "Don't you throw those bloody spears at me".

The Zulu war chant from 'Zulu' was used as a barbarian war chant in 'Gladiator'.

Silenced pistols do not make the gentle 'pffft' noise you hear in movies. They sound just like a gun going off, only a bit less loud.

In nearly every movie sword-fight the opponents are too far apart to reach each other with their swords, so the continual blade-on-blade parrying that you see is completely unnecessary.

Keep trying, it does work I promise. You do need to be in a fairly specific area, but it works, and it is nowhere near the north pole.

I think it’s to do with following lines of longitude on the north/south bits. If you’re at the North Pole and go one mile south it doesn’t matter how many miles you go east or west, if you then go one mile north you’ll always end up back at the North Pole.

Try your drawing on a football rather than a flat two dimensional piece of paper.

Sailing downstream along a river that is moving at say 10 knots, you will go faster if there is no wind, than if there is a 10 knot tailwind pushing you along.
No problem with the walking south/east/north thing and ending up at the same place (draw a "north" point on a ping pong ball and trace it out), but I can't see how you'd sail slower with a tailwind, care to elucidate?

Yes, we know that bit. smile

What I am saying is astonishing is that there are loads of spots where the exact same thing applies, but you are nowhere near the north pole.
