First rule of self-defense. Don't be there

Second rule of self defense. Don't forget the first rule.

Most people who are elite at self-defence tend to be great at resolving situations anyway.

Rickson Gracie once referred to BJJ as "learning how not to fight".

From my late Grandmother -

After declining her offer to give me some money by telling her I had enough.

One from my recent experience:
Give your dog as good a life as you can.

When she finally dies, you'll feel guilty for every time you didn't bother to walk or pet her, instead allowing her to quietly doze her lifetime away in the next room.

Something similar probably applies for the older folk in your life.

My BIL says that all the time. What a load of nonsense - if I have to be somewhere at 7:30 and walk through the door at 7:30 I'm on time, not late. If you wanted me there ready to do whatever it was we were planning to do at 7:30 then ask me to be there at 7:25 so I can prepare, but arriving on time is on time, it's not late.
Well that’s you. It’s a good rule of thumb for me. I’ve always worked that way.

Turning up the literal second something starts just looks sloppy IMO.

Everyone is different obviously.

If that's the time you're asked to be there and you turn up at that time it's not sloppy at all. What's sloppy is the idiot who asks you to turn up at a certain time when they really want you to be there earlier. If they want you there earlier then they should ask you to be there earlier.

When playing tennis "you're only as good as your second serve"

When playing a musical instrument "its not what you play, its what you don't play"

When cooking pasta "let the water wait for you, don't wait for the water"

When walking up a steep incline "lean forward, take smaller steps"

Well agree to disagree. You’d be the idiot at any of my meetings. Very rarely at business meetings do people not turn up a few minutes early in my experience.

I wouldn't, you would for not specifiying the correct time. If your meeting starts at ten then don't ask me to be there at ten, ask me to be there at 9:45 so I can prepare. I've turned up at the time specified, it's your fault for not specifying the correct time.

When I was 16 and dating my first proper girlfriend, the only thing my Dad said about the relationship was:

Don't get her pregnant. Don't get engaged.

It's good advice.
What I said to my son when he got to this point recently was: "always use a condom as that way you are in control of contraception, if you don't, the girl is". One of his mates is currently bricking it hoping that he'll get away with not using a condom as the girl didn't believe she could get pregnant that quickly.

I’m not saying you would ‘actually’ be late. It’s a common courtesy to be a few minutes early for anything.

And I didn’t say 15 minutes I said 5.

You did actually, you said if you're not five minutes early you're late. As it is I'm always early and hate being late for anything, however it's a stupid phrase that winds me up.

Maybe relax a bit then chap. It was only a little saying that is a good rule of thumb to work to in my opinion. I don’t actually hold anyone else to it, only myself.

In general do rather than don't. Say yes rather than no.
Obviously within reason.

On the other hand do not fix what's not broken.

Apply common sense to the above seemingly contradictory advise and you (or I) can make it work wink
