fking hell, I hate that! It makes my st itch.
It's another fking Americanism, more of which are increasingly being used here.

How many times have you seen people use "stock" instead of "standard", or use the stupid term "swap out/in"? amongst many more.
I find the use of the word 'hot' instead of 'attractive' etc to be quite irritating.
And that's just showing your age wink

No, it's showing that I don't like Americanisms.

My (unpopular) opinion is that people who get annoyed about trivial things like this should find other things in their lives to focus their energies on.
Normally I'd agree, I'm no grammar Nazi, but "can I get" to my ears is incredibly rude, "Please may I have" is the way to ask a stranger for something not "can I get".
I’ve no wish to start a war Fred, and if you think that anyone saying “can I get” is incredibly rude, that is entirely your prerogative, but in having that opinion, you’re saying that a large chunk of U.S. citizens are incredibly rude, as well as my wife and myself, who have been known to use that phraseology from time to time.
I feel that when I go to a restaurant, ultimately I want to wind up ‘getting’ what I’ve asked for, i.e., when it arrives, I’ve “got” it, so in saying “can I get?” I’m stating what it is I want to be “getting.”
A few years ago, in a very upmarket restaurant in Edinburgh, I asked the maître d’ if he thought “can I get” was an impolite way for a diner to order, as I’d seen a discussion on another Forum about the subject.
He said that as far as he was concerned, the customer was always right, so “may I have”, “I’d like”, or “can I get”, were all completely acceptable to him, BUT if the diner omitted the word ‘please”, then THAT was rude,
Nahhh... I am with Fred. It makes my teeth itch. You'll be saying " my bad" next. You are a savage.

Just because a restaurant serves food which is “locally sourced” doesn’t mean it’s actually any better than food which has been sourced from 24,000 miles away.

Depends by what you mean by "better".

For me, it is much better because I want to always support local produce wherever possible and I'm picky about what I eat these days.

If they'd gone the other way round it would only be 900 miles.

And "can I get" is ill-mannered.

Where do you get your food from? 24000 miles is Diane Abbott maths. NZ is approx 12000 miles from GB. biggrin

Ok, so you feel better for supporting a local business. That doesn't mean it necessarily tastes better......

Minimum wage * 37.5 hours/week * 20 = ~£300k/year

Do we start by cutting the pay of every tax funded person who is paid above this value?

The BBC and National Rail will be the first to object.

some people love the idea of keeping it local though, because nearby businesses are more worth than further away businesses. These people marry someone they went to school with and die within 5 miles of where they were born.

Otherwise, there is some benefit to those who care about carbon footprint, maybe.

In my opinion the minimum wage is a terrible idea. How can you expect to recruit the highest calibre staff in care homes etc when you can earn a similar amount working in a quiet coffee shop?
I have a great idea, coming from the very basis of economic that is supply and demand: pay them more

Why does this concept seem to completely be lost on businesses as soon as wages are concerned?

I don't entirely agree or disagree, but that is an interesting way of looking at them. It is certainly how the Dutch see them.

That stuff doesn't really work when it's being put on deliberately. It's when it's being used unthinkingly that the irritation is felt.

Someone on PH used the expression 'touched base' recently, and I'm pretty sure they weren't intending it to be humorous.

Maybe we need an idea shower to cover all the bases on this.

It's my opinion that the BBC should stop being so anti-Brexit. So far I have drunk coffee that was grown in a non-EU country, eaten marmalade that was made from oranges that didn't come from the EU, and bread that was made in the UK from UK wheat. Later I will be driving a car that wasn't made in the EU using petrol that didn't come from the EU.

I seem to be surviving ok so far, and I expect will continue to do so even after the dreaded day.
