I assume that the quote

'we have members all over the globe' was apochryphal?

Yes i know it is a dumb question , but a reference would be great

Somebody from the flat earth society did once make that statement on FB, unless it was faked.

They may have been referring to the number of members who attend Shakespeare plays, at various ticket prices, at an authentic venue.

Watched a couple of youtube vids on flat-earthers recently, and they seem to take the position that as they are in possesion of a different view of the world that it must be the case that everyone has been lied to and are therefore wrong.
They've invented the term "globalist" and use the typical argument close-out terms such as "denier" etc. for those that won't jump over to their belief.

When they go in to a discussion about it all, a number of them turned agressive (not physical, but argumentative and dismissive), which I found very strange.

If you hold a belief, then surely it must be based up on sound logic and reason. Many of these flat-earthers turn to dismissal of the truth rather than sound arguments against what they see as wrong.

For example one of their highest 'proofs' for a flat earth is that water can not be contained on a spherical object. Water must always be flat and therefore it must be containted by walls at the edge of the earth.

And the funniest thing I saw last night was guy commenting on why a hovering helicopter was not hurtling towards him at the rotation speed of the earth !
(Because he says, the earth is not rotating - its flat!) smile

You'd think so wouldn't you, but over 90% of the world's population believe in some kind of supreme being. Idiots, the lot of them.

Not that high. China alone's reckoned to be about 2/3 atheist. I think the usual wet-finger figure's about 75% globally.

Hmmm given the official communist line on religions I suspect the 2/3rds atheist is inflated somewhat (the punishment for having a smuggled copy of the bible used to be quite harsh ).

Flat-earthers are infuriating for sure, they're up there with religious folk.

The thing is though, you can actually prove the earth is not flat and yet there are people out there that still believe it...baffling.

yes I think it's quite difficult for a reasonably educated person to grasp their mindset. I've watched a bunch of the SciManDan videos and the arguments/evidence made by the flat earthers almost makes me feel embarrassed for them. They even use "freeman of the land" style arguments where they use the incorrect definition of a word for it's context e.g. "Sea level" apparently tells us the sea must be flat. Also the fact that elevation is zero all over the world when stood on the coast at sea level proves it's flat banghead

One thing that makes me chuckle is the FE model with the sun and moon circling above a pizza shaped earth. To explain day and night the sun only illuminates a very specific region at any given time so it's apparently the sun is constructed more like a nuclear powered spotlight than a star.

I first came across the flat earth society about 10 - 15 years ago, when it was still largely a parody.

Thing is I find, some of their explanations are so implausible it takes more effort and, I guess, ‘faith’, to believe them than it does the scientific ones.

I don't think they worry too much about that concept. In fact, it's probably more understandable to them.

Ultimately, the solution to flat earthers is to flatten them. Slowly, under a steam-roller while yelling "flat enough for ya?"

Does anyone know why they they think they’re being lied to? By which I mean - whether the earth is flat or not is broadly unimportant. What’s the claimed motivation for lying about it, and “fooling” people?

I just googled it and all i came up with is that flat Earthers believe they are being lied too by Nasa, who are trying to 'hide god'. Make of that what you will.

And how do they explain the fact that globes existed hundreds of years before NASA was formed?

It's all about control of the population apparently. If someone promoted an obviously false and easily disproved theory, then it would be quite effective at finding the weak of mind and easily led in the population scratchchin

Fake!

That's all the tools you need to be a flat earther.
