Every few weeks at our local co-op the prices go up. If you buy a lot of items each week the prices soon add up for example Individual steak kidney pie gone from £1.49 to £1.75. You can get a hot cooked pie in most bakers cheaper than that!
Individual steak pies are only £1.30 at M&S!

But why are they so damned expensive? I know they pride themselves on so called “Ethical” responsible buying of products. But isn’t the Co-op also supposed to be a ‘working class’ kind of thing? With the prices they charge only the bloody rich can afford to do a weekly shop in the Co-op!

The Co-op is the only supermarket where they charge you to buy a loyalty card, £1 when other supermarkets are free!

If the Co-op is so ETHICAL then why don’t they get ETHICAL with the poor British people on low incomes, the single mothers and fathers, the elderly or disabled, people living in isolated communities without their own transport who are forced to pay extortionate premium prices because the Co-op is the only shop there and they have no damned choice.

How dare the Co-op have stores in isolated communities when no other supermarket is prepared to open one, and provide a lifeline for the local community.

This - over-spending with other people's money doesn't come cheap.

My local Co-Op is expensive at face value but does regular multi-buy and single item offers, so some of the stuff we buy there is cheaper than it is at ASDA.

Compared to the other convenience stores near us, they're not too bad - after all, they're not trying to compete head on with Asda or Tesco smile

The loyalty card is £1 but they credit it back to you (or did when I got mine) so free. Also, round here, the Co-op is the cheapest of the small stores (we do have all the BIG supermarkets Torbay isn't that backwards smile ) and the offers are good and I am always getting money off coupons and the loyalty card stuff adds up really quickly if you buy own branded stuff.

I quite like our local store, all the staff are friendly and helpful and the store is well stocked and clean. My 'go to' store for all the little stuff that you need every day - every few days and easier than going miles to a big store.

they're on a par with the likes of Tesco Express & Sainsburys Local, they'll never be as cheap as the bigger supermarkets as they don't have the footfall to warrant dozens of lines of varying prices so they'll stock those that they will make the best mark up on, our local one is great for reduced items near the end of the day

Makes no sense to me.

They charge £1 for a can of emerge, it's 40p in normal corner shops.
£1.30 for a 500ml bottle of Irn Bru. these bottles are under £1 in shops. hell a 2litre bottle of irn Bru is 99p!!

back when i was in uni in the late 00s they charged about £1.30 for cans of stella, about 10p less for their crap own brand. very expensive considering at the time you could buy 8 cans of stella for £5 at most shops.

my work place has a co-op near it and their sandwiches under their meal deal are horrible, i go tesco instead if i have to.

I hate the co-op. With an absolute passion.

I lived with an ex for about a year and her local shop was a co-op. I would go in there (begrudgingly) and the queue would be around the whole shop. There would be one person serving and 6 other s stacking shelves.

Hated the place.

I should pop this in things that annoy you beyond reason.

Driving past the shop brings my blood pressure up.

Fortunately the big one down from me closed up last year. Most awful shopping experience ever. Everything almost double the price elsewhere and then there was the old moody s on the checkouts..

An interesting read and something I’m sure few shoppers are aware of.

I wasn't aware of the co-ops political links. Their ethical stance is something I can respect, but I don't understand why they still have to support one party or another.
It's understandable they may have historical links, but this day and age they should be concentrating on their core business.
