I posted this up over Christmas and got no response, maybe our resident expert was on holiday wink
So what is it? Stood by the side of the road, it's made from some thin plasticky material (fibreglass perhaps) and no more features other than what looks like a solar panel and a sticker proclaiming: 'Danger explosive atmosphere' so maybe it has batteries in it?

Yes I know in true PH style it's on its side.
Got a streetview link?

Doesn't look like any current highways infrastructure - can't see why it would have EX on it. It "could" be a powered traffic counter location, or some sort of feeder pillar for an old streetlighting layout, maybe some sort of marker for an underground utility? I've been in the roads game for aaaaaages and not come across one...
Well this is where it gets interesting:

Pardon me for perhaps being a bit dense but what does the green box on a pole in the google maps location have to do with the original photo ?

The other way to spot iPhone owners biggrin
No sir, S5 biggrin

I've never known rotating the pic (from where it's stored) to work before now as it seems to carry the same code across (or whatever it is), but then i've never done it in Dropbox before now either and there we go.
I love Dropbox, it's ace.
Does it contain something for monitoring a gas main buried below ?

Why are reporters so lazy and sensationalist ? Yes, the people of Shepley are indeed wiser - they now know what it is. And it doesn't take a huge leap of imagination to understand, from its name, what it does !

Has there ever been a semi famous singer called Eddie Shoestring? FIL swears he drinks with him in a Glasgow pub, but Google only shows the Trevor Eve series

David Gedge is also unsure why it might be too cold to snow, but at least he sings about it in a proper northern accent.

When a fatal air accident is classed as ‘pilot error’ by the CAA / NTSB ETC what is the insurance / compensation situation for the families of those found to be at fault ?

Simplified: ( Which legal compo cases never are)

Aircraft failure
1. Maintenance issue - Aircraft operator pays
2. Design issue - Aircraft manufacturer pays

Pilot error - Airline pays.

I was actually referring to the pilot him/herself. Would their family receive anything from the airlines insurers ?

Why does 'chipper' and 'chippy' mean sort of the opposite thing.

I get the link to chip on shoulders, but where does chipper come from?

Chipper?
Do you mean wood chipper, potato chipper or feeling chipper?

'Chippy' is just a place that sells fish 'n' chips.
