Probably the same reasons that VW dropped the Pump Duse engines and started doing Common Rail instead.

The CR is generally quieter and a slightly better fuel economy than the PD.

I'd guess the CR is better on emissions as they can control the injection timing, allowing you to completely change the engines operation when it's being tested for emissions which I doubt you can do on a PD biggrin
Well.... depends how you measure it wink

Anyway, PD engines were almost universally loathed by anyone who owned one more than 5 years old back in the day as I recall. They were from the generation of TDis that liked to fill DPF, clog ERGs, st Injectors and generally send soot pouring out at every opportunity, add to the fact they were also from the era of the £1000+ clutch swap because of the new fangled DMFs and lots of people started to wonder if everyone jumping to Diesel was a good idea.

VW CR engines were better in almost every respect, bar the whole cheating on emissions tests thing, the later AdBlue versions are pretty good (although Bristol doesn't seem to agree).

I’ve heard of the Victorian era, Edwardian, Tudor etc and also the Elizabethan age.
What era are we currently living in? Elizabethan? Regina? Windsor?
The Second Elizabethan Period.

Why is Truffle Philadelphia cheese only a "Limited Edition"? It tastes so good why wouldn't they make it part of their standard range?
Either because the stuff that gives it its flavour is limited in its supply and thus genuine limited edition. Or...

They're testing the waters before committing to adding it to their range (which would require new production lines, investment, etc. Or

A commercial 'ploy' to charge a premium for something.

Most likely, the second one.

It basically comes down to this - better injection control so lower (or cheating) emissions, lower noise, smoother power delivery. Having the highest specific output doesn't sell half as many cars as a smooth engine.

No. Relativity is a bit odd like that.

For example, if you are travelling at lightspeed and turn your headlights on, the light from your headlights will leave you at the speed of light. The rules we are used to in normality don't apply and it feels counter-intuitive. And Quantum Physics is even more crazy.

I did degree level Physics and it still bent my mind. silly
When I am driving (or flying) at the speed of sound, I believe no noise escapes from the front and no-one can hear me coming.

If so, how then can light escape from the front when I am flying at the speed of light?

silly

Because you never quite reach the speed of light.

To an external observer the light is travelling at its normal velocity with you going just a little slower.

To you, thanks to time dilation, it appears that the beam of light travels away from you at the speed of light

Why are surgeons known as Mr when your GP or the person you see before them is a Dr? Surely Dr is a 'higher' grade of title than Mr?

I'm not at all sure, but maybe something to do with surgeons in the distant past being regarded as mere 'sawbones' and not as refined, clever, or respectable as doctors?

Because Relativity. As I said earlier, the normal rules don't apply and trying to think of it in common sense terms is invalid.

The speed of light in a vacuum is an absolute, therefore if you turn on your headlights at near the speed of light, the light *has* to escape at the speed of light.

Yes, I know, it messes with your head. silly

Exactly. It was a trade, and surgeons apprenticed and learned on the job. They didn't study medicine at university, so never obtained a doctorate.

Crazy, eh?

Try calling a surgeon "doctor" and see if they take it as a compliment. wink

(Hint: They won't, and most will get quite shirty)

Ah, well there is Mr, Dr and Mr formally known as Dr. You see a doctor in a hospital, they're just a doctor. See a doctor in a hospital and they're called Mr, then they must be important. Think of it as an early form of humblebragging.

You need to go older than that, late PD was a bag of st. They tried to make them too advanced.

The properly ancient stuff like the 90bhp in old Audis and VW stuff never died. A mate had an Audi 80 Avant on an N reg, and it was indestructable, engine wise. It had been clocked many times by the time he had it, and was showing 180k then. He took his around Europe giving it proper stick all the way and it just lapped it up. I rattled around in a PD130 Passat for a while, and it was the same. Ex company car, and the engine was dead fine. By dead fine I mean disgustingly unrefined, and quite stinky.

How do you achieve a double post on Pistonheads?

I've a fair number of posts behind me now and I have never managed it. What am I doing wrong?

You iPhone users, it's all about you isn't it; double post, it's an iPhone, wrong orientation of a photo, it's an iPhone, well I'll tell you now I've done both and I'm on Android so there!!!
