You need a nucleation site to start water boiling, if you heat it evenly in a smooth container (an unscratched glass for instance) you can raise the temperature over the normal boiling point. If you disturb it and this provide a nucleation site it will boil explosively until the temperature reduces to the boiling point.

In the glass in a microwave scenario this normally means a steam explosion throwing scalding water around.

You can also supercool water in plastic bottles so it is liquid at below 0C, when you tap the bottle it will rapidly turn into ice.
Does water still evaporate form the surface without nucleation?

According to Google isn't nucleation the creation of crystals so that would work in the ice example but not boiling?
No, nucleation is required for boiling. Hence why initial boiling is called Nucleated boiling, then full film boiling.

Spending 20 seconds on Wikipedia is dangerous wink

Don't think so. It's the same idea as bubbles in a fizzy drink forming at the point of imperfections in the glass, and why they etch the base of lager glasses.

Today's date is May 21st.

Why do magazines start selling their "July" issue today, or in June perhaps?

Wondered this one for years.

I wondered if this was a budget emergency thing, when in a thin month they'd rush out the next issue a bit early to get the money in, and then they're stuck to a new schedule from then on.

Supposedly it's also to ensure the magazine spends as long as possible on display before shop managers pull it. Although it's going to get pulled when the next issue turns up anyway, so who knows.

Well yes, they sell it until they don't sell it anymore

A mate used to work at Halfords and once a month, someone had to take all the magazines and tear the front covers from all the unsold copies and send those back, rather than posting the whole magazine back, as proof of those which hadn't been sold when the new edition turned up.

This.

One of my former clients was a major publishing house. Front covers were printed on a different material that couldn't be recycled with the rest of the magazine although they've got a machine that can do separation these days. A lot of things needed to be taken out, product samples, staples, any pages printed using different materials (I.E. centrefolds). The publishing companies are required to recycle as much as possible.

We did ask them why all unsold magazines needed to be returned, it was because of advertisement deals, expiring offers, things like that.

But I still don't get why they call the issue "July" when it is for sale in late May/most of June.

I used to notice this when I actually bought magazines in the 90s/00s and I only notice today as I follow my mate's magazine on Facebook and its shared that the July issue is now out!

Literally the top link on google (which is Wikipedia) starts with: Nucleation is the first step in the formation of either a new thermodynamic phase ...
Which means it works for both ice formation and boiling.

Yes. Liquids can self-nucleate however it's rather slower than if there is an external site. This also means eventually a superheated or supercooled liquid will spontaneously phase change even in the absence of external nucleation sites. I.e. if you leave a supercooled bottle of water long enough it will freeze, and likewise if you could maintain a superheated cup of water at >100C long enough it would boil.

Magazine publishing traditionally used the date at which it comes off sale, I believe, rather than the date it goes on sale.

Backside-foremost if you ask me, but hey ho!

In your July edition of Speedy Car magazine you can read the comparison test of the 2020 executive compact saloons.
Imagine being able to buy a piece of the future!

Well, if you're talking about the neighbour wanting front extension thread, support vastly out weighed criticism in it, and I've had numerous PM's offering support and sympathies since I pulled it. Wanting to improve the area you live in is not being a nimby, you can be part of the solution.

I wasn't actually. It's much less of a big deal to the rest of us.

If individuals have circumvented the rules, safe in the knowledge that they simply need to wait 4 years then they have 'got away with it' then that is wrong. If not on a legal level, most definitely a moral one.

At some point a line has to be drawn though. The fact that it's 4 years is a matter of pragmatism.

I have one. Whatever happened to dealer stickers in cars rear windows? Something made me think of them when driving today, and I observed cars around me for a good half hour, I'd estimate 90% of cars didn't have them. 20 years ago pretty much every car sold had a supplying dealers window sticker, those maybe 8x2" ones, in the bottom right of the rear window. Did the car dealer industry suddenly decide that they don't work?

Drive to Scotland. Every other car has a bright yellow slightly skew-wiff Arnold Clark sticker in the back window.

Well, I'm curious what you're beef is with me then, but truthfully I'm not bothered. I always attempt to maintain decorum on PH, as I do in any dealings with others in life. My conscience is clear.

We'll agree to disagree about flouting planning, and leave it there.

I have no beef, I was merely responding to your question about planning. The fact that you chose to assume I was directly targeting you says more about you than me.

I'd have thought it had something to do with the rise in popularity of tinted windows making them a waste of time, and perhaps also with the dealer name (or at the least their postcode) having to be on the reg plate taking over the sticker's role. Backing plates are still quite popular.

It was in response to 'No wonder you get a poor reaction in some of your threads', which is quite a derogatory statement. It's not saying anything about me, other than surprise.

I can't recall any occasion of majority lambasting in any thread I've started, although there will never be full agreement on any thread, ever.
