I'm going away on Thursday and have just realised my passport expiry date is the exact day I'm flying back. Does anyone know whether the date listed on the passport is the first day you cannot use it or the last day you can? Google is curiously unhelpful.

I think your first concern will be if you will be allowed to leave. Lots of places require e.g. 3/6 months left on your passport. Had a scare myself three years ago! Hope it's not the case here.

Where are you flying to? Quite a few countries require you to have several months left on the passport.

Normally you’d have to have at least 6 weeks to go in and out.

Once mine got so close I drove to Newport and stood for most of the day in the queue - bumped into Jiffy (Johnathan Davies as he was behind me - very nice chap)

Only Bulgaria, so inside the EU. Strictly speaking I don't need a passport to get back but I do need proof of nationality and the passport is the only thing I have. I guess it'll soon be a moot point but who thought it was a good idea not to offer EU ID cards in the UK. banghead

ETA: The Thomas Cook website just says: "If you’re travelling within the EU your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay and you don’t need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this." so it sounds like I'm OK. I'll just have to hope the flght doesn't get cancelled. hehe

Some countries require 6 month validity so I'd have a good search before you attempt to travel. Most don't though. I'd expect a raised eyebrow at least for your return flight. If you had a big delay and went to next day then the carrier is normally responsible to bring you back if you're inadmissible. So they could refuse you passage if there's a risk.

I hope you don't have a hassle though. Atb.

You might need an emergency passport office visit. Check with the airline but I'd be surprised if they let you go, I certainly wasn't allowed to when it was 6 weeks on mine but mine was a work trip so I just didn't go.

ETA just saw you are staying within the EU. Not sure on that one, might was outside EU and it was a firm no.

I wouldn't worry if it's within the EU.

Where were you going? A lot of people say this for US, but it doesn't apply to UK (and many other countries) passport holders. You can still have issues though as some airlines impose worst case rules of their own.

Something similar happened to us last year.

I realised I was checking in the night before leaving that my wife's passport expired whilst we were away.

No problem getting on the flight and was tempted to blag it on the way home but was old in no uncertain terms she wouldn't get on the plane.

We had a trip to the consulate to issue a travel document for her to fly home. Fortunately we were only a small boat ride away from Split so it was easy. Took a couple of days.

If you can possibly get an emergency appointment in the UK I would.

Croatia - I think I had about a month or so left - check in said I needed 6 months or something. Much googling and panic and it was resolved.

Was that before it was in the EU? Countries aren't allowed to enforce such restrictions within the EU because of the freedom of movement rules. I suppose travel agents/airlines still could, though.

Go to get it changed this week in person a ball ache sure but you’ll remove a big headache which might hang over the whole holiday.

They're bound by the same rules - they can't take it upon themselves to restrict movement.

Always baffles me that, "here's an expiry date, but sometimes it 3-6mths earlier". Righto.....

We were in Croatia last year and Ryan Air were adamant she wouldn't be getting on the plane

If it was mine I would have risked it.
Not sure my life would have been worth living if she had been left in Split airport. Even though it was her passport.

That isn't to say you won't have problems with arsy check-in staff. Who are you flying with? Even BA have form for getting it wrong and only admitted they messed up when the press get involved.

Coming back with Wizz Air, whose website just says to check with the embasy of the country in question.
