Hey guys,

around 4 months ago i bought a 2014 disco 4 (the facelift, SDV6 diesel like 256 hp or something around there) with just under 50 k kilometers from a local big known trustable auto store (traded my freelander(130k) 2 and nissan xtrail(220k, second engine)) and ended up paying 32k euro for it. the prices i see online for disco 4s with 100k kilometers are around 50k so i think i got a good deal.

i have a few VERY important questions.

to the car:

1 owner before me, most kilometers from the highway. he bought the car because the wait for his custom range rover was 9 months but that somehow turned into nearly 2 years and then he didn't accept it anymore (or something like that according to the salesman, was the 7th car i bought off him).

has literally nearly all the extras possible, i think something like close to 90k euro in the brochure.

service at 25k and when i bought it (included with the sale contract + new tires)

great car, love it. has nearly 60k now with no problems.

My questions:

are there any major known problems that come at a specific number of kilometers?

if yes, what are they, how much does it cost and is it worth changing the part before it actually happens?

is there anything important should know about the discovery 4? i did alot of research before buying and i know alot but you never know if theres anything else.

is there anything aftermarket worth buying? (EU legal)

When should i do oil/transmission/coolant fluid changes? id rather be more safe then what it says in the handbook. can i even do them on my own without having any trouble?

pic of the car is when i saw it at the dealership.

love the car, i am now officially part of the discovery family.

cheers

The internet will tell you that these will explode at anytime.

In my experience of having a 2013 Disco 4 with nearly 130K Miles + Disco 3 was fine and with no problems. Just service it regular, change the cam belt around 90K miles and use good tyres on all 4 wheels.

Others on here will be able to advise on more specific technical points but enjoy it and just remember these are 2.5ton twin chassis 4x4's. Engine, transmition, brakes, steering will be under much more stress than a small SUV or freelander so thing will wear out and need replacing at some point.

However they are worth every penny so look after it and carry out preventative maintenance rather than reactive maintenance.

why do alot of people say they "explode" after a while?

i mean i understand nothing is perfect and not everyone loves the same car but in my opinion they are well built. yes the maintenence is on the higher side but every car needs maintenence one way or the other.

are discos really as bad as toyota and jeep lovers say?

Ignore the Internet in General smileshoot

Someone pays £50K for a Landover and then the Sat Nav freezes, or the left buttock massage seat touch controller doesn't work then its all hell let loose on the internet ' I don't expect this for £40K car' blah blah blah.

So its all reletive

They are well built and very good cars. I would argue the Disco 4 is one of the best cars of recent times and certainly the best Land Rover.
However they have many many things that can and could go wrong over time.

Set your expectations, look on actual Disco forums and you will get a great idea of what to expect. Just budget accordingly. Enjoy one of the greats.

Sign up to disco4..co.uk, a huge amount of knowledge on there.

In the meantime, cambelts at 7 years or 112k miles, whichever comes first.

If I remember right, front and rear diff and transfer box oils at 75k I did them myself. Only use LR oils, worth the extra no matter what anyone tells you. It took me 2 hours to do them all, and I am most certainly NOT a mechanic!

Transmission oil before 80k miles. LR tell you sealed for life, but ZF ho make the gearboxes say 75k miles. Well worth doing, but get someone to do a "mega flush". That replaces 100% of the oil, a normal fluid change (at LR) only does approx 50%. This will stop the torque converter issues some people see at later miles.

Suspension arms, anti roll bar links usually go around 80k miles. Not too expensive, and all but the suspension arms are an easy DIY. Arms only difficult as the often need cutting off.

Edited to say all the above are miles, not KMs.

Regarding the "they explode" issues, this is related to the crank shaft snapping.

It does happen, but in reality its a very low percentage. Biggest complaint is that even the LR warranty wont cover it! They exclude it because its a "known defect".

Warranty Direct cover that issue. It seems there is no rhyme or reason to then=m snapping, low or high mileage, well serviced or not. Still an issue even on new LR cars with this engine.
