I have two McNair “shirts”. They are wonderful - I can’t recommend them highly enough. Great product, super-helpful people.
I really want one of those, but they are sooooooo expensive!

I went for this a month or so ago.

Berghaus Maitland Goretex.

Only needed an outer jacket as I have a Berghaus fleece which will zip inside this for the odd chilly days we have over here.
Very Liam Gallagher smile

Looks a bit better here

Having lived in South Shields (and now within a stone's throw from the factory) all my life I really should have had a Barbour before now. I'm now converted, they're fantastic quality.
Love Barbour Jackets. Dad always had them for shooting, and I now have two wax jackets and a quilted one.

Id really like to get myself a winter coat/jacket.

but i want something thats

- lightweight
- comfy
- doesnt restrict movement
- is relatively thin, or can be compacted into a small form and stuffed into a bag.
£70 max.

i really don't care about it looking smart, pretty, as long as it's highly practical, comfy. and doesn't look like
- i should be participating in winter sports
- isn't multicoloured.
Blacks have Peter storm down jackets on sale at present which look ok for a decent price.

Any recommendations for a Grey or Tan overcoat. (Am 6,1 and slim-ish)

Probably going to be for "smart casual" so almost certainly worn mostly with jeans/shirt. (Maybe very occasionally a suit)

Circa £100ish

Rather than start another thread I thought I'd piggy back off a long running one.

Any suggestions on something all-year but with a bit of winter warmth?

Are Musto still any good?

I find myself slightly shocked what even normal jackets appear to cost yikes

I have a Musto country coat which is nicely made if not especially warm (though not necessarily meant to be). I have a sailing jacket from them too which is very good.

I rate them and would buy more from them. But they are are not a go to for smart clothing.

Thank you.

I'm looking at the more sailing themed but stuff you'd be able to wear anywhere styles.

Stuff like Fjallraven and Arcteryx just looks so sodding expensive and especially when buying unseen.

As others have said in the thread, there is also a risk of some stuff being bonkers hot. Fine if you're hiking to the North Pole, less good for visiting M&S food hall.

Got a arc'teryx beta FL in the black friday deals (45% off) to replace my aging Mountain equipment firefox jacket

Very thin, very light. Packs well into the bottom of a bag and holds up to most of what scottish weather can throw up.

Not all gore-tex are equal.

Packlight = thin and light, "durably waterproof"
Pro = thicker and completely waterproof

Presumably there's no insulation in the jacket itself?

This is what's confusing when you're shopping online you see terms like waterproof and windproof but other than "padded" linings where it's obvious there's some insulation it's difficult to tell what's going to actually keep me warm.

There is no insulation in the jacket. It's a waterproof shell. ............. Edit: being honest. Fitting the jacket properly, doing up the cuffs and the bottom to seal out the wind... these jackets can be perfectly warm. I deliver parcels down to 4 degrees celcius with just a t-shirt and a waterproof shell

I wear it on its own for high output things like delivering amazon/dhl parcels or rock climbing. Combine with a down jacket, eg rab microlight alpine under it for walking.

A "padded" down jacket eg, Rab microlight alpine is only "showerproof" before it completely wets out.

I usually just layer up, with fleeces and a shell. But just ordered this, fortunately the faux fur trim is detachable.

I'll probably reconfigure it to a Davy crocket style.

Was looking for a decent winter coat on line the other day, found this but unfortunately not available in the up for some reason. Annoying as I think it’s really smart!

Ended up getting a coat from M&S that will do the job and less ££

I've got a few different Arc'teryx jackets, yes they are expensive but in my experience the quality and longevity more than justifies the price. You can pick up some decent bargains if you shop around (sportpursuit quite often have 50% off) Have a look at something like the Kappa hoody, fairly understated looks, warm and waterproof enough unless you are out in the rain for prolonged periods. Mine is 9 years old and gets worn daily from November > March but basically looks brand new.

Just read your other post about knowing what you are getting. Look for something with primaloft/coreloft synthetic insulation, the higher the number the warmer the jacket (around 60-80 g/m2 about right for the UK).
