The first moon landing. One of the earliest memories I have was sitting with three generations watching it, and being bored, annoyed, no one would play with me.

When St Paul's was the highest building in London.

When you could wander into Downing street whenever you felt like it.

When every building in London was covered in black dust.

When you stunk of fag smoke after a night in the pub.
Then again, people didn't just sit there staring at mobile phones, so it was swings and roundabouts I suppose.

To be fair, there wasn't much to see during the landing itself as there was no TV image being broadcast from the descending Lunar Module (the radio bandwith was not wide enough to support both essential radio communications/telemetry and non-essential TV). During the landing stage this is all we saw on the live broadcast -

I dunno, Multicoloured Swapshop on a Saturday morning, cars that had handles with which you wound down the windows, Atari 2600, three channels of telly, video recorders, first CD players, etc.

Pahh, I remember half penny sweets!
DoublePahhh, I remember 1/4 penny sweets! (Blackjacks and Fruitsalads were 4 for a penny). (And that was an old penny, so eight sweets for a modern penny)

We had a playground, but we didn't have a climbing frame, you just shimmied up the chains of the swings and hung from the top bar or if you were brave, tightrope walked along the top. Did for a few of my baby teeth.

I'm old enough to remember when...

  • going out during the summer holidays only coming home when I got hungry
  • kids went scrumping
  • kids walked to school without adults
  • when kids learn how to spanner by helping dad service the car
  • when public information ads were common and interesting
  • people made mix tapes off the radio
  • when channel 4 was launched
  • the Betamax - VHS format war
  • the first space shuttle launch and the future looked awesome
  • the Corona wagon delivering a crate of pop each week.

I'm only a lad, nowhere near as old as many (most) of you on here, however I can still recall the utter wonder of being given one of the new 20 pence pieces, when they were introduced. You could buy a lot of sweets with 20p.
