I've got to drive down to Lyon (and back);
can anybody suggest any interesting places stay overnight
approximately half way from Calais to Lyon please?

Beaune is usually our stopover on way to SoF.

Very pretty town. Lots of hotels.

Thanks - I'll look at that, it looks tempting and
I can see that it's ideal for a SoF stopover,
but it's relatively close to my final destination
so ideally I'd like something little further north.

Beaune is a good shout, anywhere on the Cote D'Or, between Dijon and Puligny Montrachet is good.

But if you're heading to Lyon then I'd go no further than the Reims/Epernay area from Calais. Central Reims is great, stay at the Best Western Premier Hotel De La Paix right in the centre (Own parking under the hotel) and wander down the Place Drouet d'erlon for a drink or bite to eat

OP, I can recommend Epernay as a place to stay. Stay at the Villa Eugene at the top end of town, saunter down the Avenue de Champagne past the champagne houses to the centre of town, dinner at Cave de Champagne...happy times.

Reims - Epernay …… I can see this becoming a rather expensive stopover in terms of alcohol biggrin

I'd go slightly further to Chalons-en-Champagne and stay at the Hotel d'Angleterre. Lovely hotel, good value, with a great restaurant and the town is much smaller, so less of a detour.

Well its not a bad shout but 2 weekends ago I stayed at the Angleterre on friday and after a trip to Burgundy, the Reims hotel on the sunday. Chalon is nice enough but Reims has much more going on and the Hotel De La Paix is really nice. Rooms are very recently refurbished and highly recommended.
The posh restaurant at the Angleterre is excellent though, Michelin starred

Could always push the boat out and stay and eat at Les Crayeres.

I have stayed in Beaune and like it very much indeed. Some great hotels and great restaurants. Its an easy drive from Calais and the following days drive to Lyon is easy. However, my advice about heading there is allow MUCH more time than you think!

Last time down we stayed in Dijon and what a surprise. Great old town centre. We stayed in a slightly weird small hotel but it was great. Still working our way through the mustard!

Dijon is great but really deserves more than an overnighter. Also being larger more of a pain getting in and finding your hotel. We stayed in La Cloche and very nice too.

Laon seems interesting and geographically convenient, has anyone stayed there?

You're right about Dijon. We planned on being up early and beating the traffic to Avignon. Found ourselves lingering and as a result it took 8 hours! That's a Saturday in August for you though!

If you fancy a detour and don't mind adding a few KM's, you could look at Luxembourg/Metz, Nancy, or Besancon, none half way but all nice...

Its progress through the last 10-12 years is impressive. First went when the son (Arnaud Lallement) had just taken over from his dad, had 1 star then and slightly tired but cheap hotel rooms.
Constant improvement first up to 2 stars and then 3 stars a few years ago with corresponding upping of decor and unfortunately, prices!!

We went when it had two stars a few years ago. Never went to les Crayeres when it had three.
