With regards those bemoaning the football fans responses, you just don’t get it and never will.
My father took me to my first Gaelic game when I was 8 years old in 1975. It was a relatively meaningless League playoff game. Armagh against Clare.
We won.
You dont get to choose what GAA team you support. if you're from Armagh you support Armagh, if you're from Tyrone you support Tyrone and so on. I dont know of anyone who has ever switched allegiance. One of my customers is a Kerry man. He's lived in the North for 25 years, married a girl/woman from up here but he's still a Kerryman, his kids are Tyrone born and bred and Tyrone fans but not him. All this by way of context, its not like soccer, where you get kids in Northern Ireland in Man. Utd. or Barcelona tops....you are what you are.
It's the same for players. We had players who lived in Dublin but travel back to Armagh to play for the county team, as I said you are what you are, players who transfer away (very very few) are despised.
In the grand scheme of things Armagh are not very good, in 130 years they have gotten to 4 All Ireland finals, 3 in my lifetime (50 plus years).
The first one they got to that I was at was 1977, and they got tanked. I go to nearly every game, home or away, and shudder to think how much money I've spent following them.
It would be 25 years from 1977 til we got to another final. We had a good squad (the best in our history) and had been to 2 semi-finals in the previous 3 years, losing both by slender margins.
On the 22nd September 2002 we won the All Ireland for the first and so far only time in our history. We beat the most succesful team ever in the final. I was there in the ground when we won. Grown men wept like children, not ashamed to say I was one of them. My father was another.
My father went to his first game in 1953. His father took him by train to Dublin to see Armagh get beaten in the All Ireland final that year. They lost! My granda was a true Armagh fan too and went to many games. he was seiously ill for a few years before he died, but watched the games on T.V and then talked to us about them when we called. He passed away before he could see Armagh reach the promissed land.
On the way home from Dublin on the day we won, my dad asked me to go home via Jonesboro, where my granda is buried. we stopped at the graveyard and my dad went to the grave and put a tiny Armagh flag on the grave.
I have a fantastic wife, love her very much but she laughs when asked, my best day ever...not our wedding day, I have'nt always wanted to marry her. I've 2 kids, fantastic kids and it was brilliant when they were born, but I have'nt always wanted kids, the day we moved into our first house, the day we paid the mortgage off etc etc. all good days but nothing will ever compare with the 22nd September 2002.
