Local enough to me for me to be able to see the smoke yesterday

"The flames took so long to put out that the firefighters worked in shifts and some had time for a refreshment break.

They walked one mile to McDonald's on the other side of the retail park and asked for free teas and coffees because they did not carry money in their fire-fighting gear."

You have to be a special kind of dumb......

Maybe they need to pay more wages - and employ staff with some common sense.

As with all similar cases I suspect the staff on the tills have no discretion or decision making authority.

Which employee are you talking about? McD's or the fire service?

Person in charge does.
It is not rocket science.

Why on earth should McDonalds, or any other shop for that matter, provide free hot drinks to fire fighters?

I think expecting a private company to donate drinks each time there is a fire is a bit much.
Great if they do offer, but can't complain if they don't.

Maybe the fire crews should keep some petty cash or/and a supply of drinks in the trucks.
Or if a big incident I'm sure management could arrange refreshments?

The staff in a McDonalds restaurant are highly unlikely to have the authorisation to give away drinks for free, unless the franchise owner was available to authorise.

McDonald's get "blasted" for not giving stuff away, OK a few drinks cost them nothing and it's a st PR, but likely due to a lack of thinking by someone on the counter.

However, do the fire service really not make provision for this kind of thing?

Seems odd to send firefighters out where they're likely to get very hot (and therefore thirsty?) with zero provision for it when they may be miles from a McDonalds or anywhere similar.

Is that normal?

That doesn't really answer my question.

They drive around in lorries with hundreds of gallons of water on board, but don't take a bottle for themselves? Seems like poor planning.

The duty manager should surely be able to authorise free food/drink? There must be many occasions it happens for all sorts of reasons. Presumbly it goes into the tills and the reporting, and the franchisee/accounts person can ask them if the amounts on a certain night look excessive.

I'm open to have my opinion changed on the matter.

So far nobody has actually answered it.

Because none of you have actually got a reason why.

Just after my father retired from the fire service they started up a catering team and he worked in that for quite a few years, they disbanded it just after he retired from the team. I think before it was in operation they had a contract with one of the voluntary services, and now I think they are using pre-packed food and drinks.
