Gentlemen,

Where to start?!

I'm collecting a FFRR on Saturday and I would like to get an additional c.80-100L tank in the boot of the car.

We will own the car and plan to do so for the next 5 years minimum. Ideally, I would like it to be fitted and carpeted so it stays in keeping with the car. Also, if possible, I would like to use the existing fuel filler and not start drilling holes!

Has anyone done this or can anyone recommend a good place to start?

Why do you need to double the range?? Are you not concerned at the risk of having 80-100l of additional fuel sloshing around in the boot in a makeshift tank??

Is this even legal due to safety concerns? Just asking. Most fuel tanks seem to be outside the bodyshell or at least outside the passenger compartment. Not suggesting there is a problem, just thinking aloud.

Look at places that spec out 4x4 for Overlanding, they may already be additional tanks available,
though would more likely be underneath - ie where the spare tyre is

It's definitely possible to fit auxilary fuel tanks to 4x4s.
Whether it's possible to fit one to a RR, I don't know.

e.g.

Ah thinking ahead Sir, I congratulate you !

When the zombie apocalypse happens and everyone else with 4x4's etc has ran out of fuel, you will be able to proceed at haste safe in the knowledge you can out range anyone else. Genius !

Back in the real world Id have to ask why ? plus its a costly fill up and an additional hammering on MPG.

Tip - spend less time on the PS4 and enjoy the FFRR as it is.

I would start by googling "custom auxiliary fuel tank".

LPG conversions for the L322 use the internal spare wheel well as somewhere to site a tank. No idea if this space could also be used for petrol.
The standard tank is already a pretty good shape in how it uses the underside space, but there might be enough real-estate under there between the sills and transmission tunnel to fit something extra.

I'd imagine you could easily co-opt an LPG tank to the job of holding petrol.

They're available in loads of sizes, are enormously strong, and safe to have 'inside the car' as long as they're properly fitted.

Thanks all. Emailing the LPG and off-roading guys. It looks like spare wheel space is the better solution but let's see what comes back...!

On a tangent and apologies as it's of no help to the OP, but I recently saw this peculiar creation (LPG-converted 2015 Vauxhall Viva with the whole boot used for the tank - see picture 14)

Would it work for long enough to worry about fuel range?

Do Land Rover offer additional auxiliary long range tanks elsewhere in the world for remote use or have they completely abandoned that market?

I know OEM auxiliary tanks are available for most Land Cruisers so maybe worth a try.

Hammering on MPG? I'd be surprised if you could even measure the difference, you're only talking about the weight of a passenger in a hugely lardy vehicle. I'd bet that you'd actually save money by not having to spend a couple of minutes in a forecourt / small detour to fill up etc.

The cost of filling it up is also of no relevance either. It's another £130ish, makes no difference if it's in your fuel tank or in your bank account (unless you're concerned about petrol theft, does that happen in the real world?).

my Landrover camper has an aux 45litre tank, I can either fill it direct, or pump to and from the main tank. a dohnut tank in the wheel well would work with a transfer pump.

You could fairly cheaply convert a toroidal LPG tank to an auxiliary fuel tank. The spare wheel well on a FFRR should be good for 80 litres or so?

I'f just go the full hog and convert it to LPG though.

Why do you need an extra fuel tank?

I've been thinking about the same for my CLK63; extra range would be very convenient.

A toroidal tank in the spare wheel well appears to be the best option. Remember you'll need a vent system with some kind of anti-trickle valve.

Doesn't filling up and max delivery 100L at the pumps become an issue?

That's aside from obvious safety concerns (which can be addressed), lower mpg and poorer handling due to extra weight..
