Assuming Windows 10 on both machines and assuming desktop acts as host for the shared file check the name of the machine.

Create a user on the desktop called something witty like ShareUser

Create a folder on the Desktop at the root of the C: drive called Something equally witty like EzyQShare

Right click on it and select Share with...

In that dialog add the ShareUser and make them read write.

Put the stuff you want to share there.

On the other Laptop open a file explorer windows and in the address bar type \\Desktop machine name\ and hit enter

the shared resource will appear and you can right click on it and select Map drive, pick a letter and select connect as and type in the ShareIUser credentials you set up.
