Genuine question. Why do so many people profess to be "shocked" when a 70 year old man dies?
Is it more that we tend to forget how old these people are, rather than actually being shocked by their death? I mean, average life expectancy in the UK for men is a little under 81 years, according to Google results for 2016. And the law of averages means that for every man who reaches 90, one must die at around 70. So not that "shocking" in reality.
But I suppose we all do it. Watching old Top Of The Pops episodes, or films from the 1980s, and thinking it was "a few years ago" but then realising that it was more like 35 years ago, and those artists who were around 30 then will be approaching pension age now. I suppose none of us likes to see our heroes getting old, or worse still dying off, because it reminds us of what is coming our way too...

Well, 70 is quite young these days and presumably, as a sportsman he would always have been in good shape.I think it is true though we might tend to remember people in their prime. I have an image of Bob Willis from Headingly '81 when I think of him.
Actually, thinking about it, that is the best way to think of him.
RIP Bob.
