Gordon Banks .
To my generation he was THE England goal keeper . A boyhood hero of mine .
I will admit to giving a groan of despair when a saw the news this morning and taking a quiet minute of contemplation .
RIP .

He was to goalkeeping what Pele was to outfield play. The standard by which all others are measured.

His peers and others are saying that he was one of the best. I can't think of another who was better.

Like Pele, he looked like a modern player when all others were in baggy shorts.

England might have had two World Cups if he hadn't caught food poisoning before the West Germany game in 1970.

RIP bow

An amazing keeper. Nice man too by all reports.

When he made “that save” from Pele, Alan Mullery is reported to have patted him on the head saying “You should have caught it”. Apparently the tirade of abuse he received from Banks was quite remarkable. smile

RIP.
