Anyhow, I've been following the mini business with interest. By, that brings back a few memories. A lass I knew in Norfolk back in the 80's had a 1275GT, managed to install a three inch pipe on a Saturday afternoon. Had to cut a hole in the skirt though as it came out straight through the middle at the back.

Happy days.

Just about every story or anecdote I've ever come across about 1275GTs involves bonkers 'upgrades', tales of multiple rollovers or certain death, it's no wonder there aren't many good original ones left! Incidentally this year is the fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of the Clubman and 1275GT range, so any surviving early cars will now no doubt go up in value even more. About a mile away from me there's a '74 / '75 Clubbie shell sitting on a bloke's drive awaiting a new owner, it's been there for at least a year with no glass in it but it might still make a good basis for a project of some sort. He's had it on ebay three or four times with a BIN price of £1500 but so far no takers.

In my attempts to retain my title of "Greatest husband in the universe" since arriving home I have sorted out all the out of date paperwork from our file box and shredded it, dusted through the house, cleaned the kitchen and bathroom and hoovered (vaxed as that's what we have) throughout!!!!

My 1275 GT story......

The daft old bint who lived next door to the SAAB garage where I worked had one ,named BARKY due to the reg being BRK.

She also had a poodle.

She thought it perfectly acceptable to enter our premises via the workshop ,Health n Safety not what it is nowadays.

She was just a bit bonkers and foreign and had a weird name too ,pronounced Swarva ,correct spelling unknown.

Car was always nice condition ,a T reg .

My big bro had his Cooper S for a very long time. When he first bought it in 1975 there was an insurance loading because it was red. There were more accidents involving red ones, his was red, so he had to pay more. By the time he sold it in 2010, I think it was, it was a classic and cost next to nothing to insure. Somewhere in between in the history, the insurance industry had a little rethink and lumped the 1275 Cooper S in with the 1275GT. He was mortified. Insulted beyond words that people actually existed who could believe the Cooper S and 1275GT were in any way comparable.

He's okay now. He got over it.

I recall when I first had a look at Miss Norfolk's 1275GT it had some sort of woeful 'pancake' air filter on it, banged against the bulkhead it did. Dispensed with that, put a proper one on. Could have been a Pipercross? Can't really remember now, it certainly went a lot better afterwards.

I remember it had a set of run flat tyres on it too, Dunlop Denovos maybe? They may have had dedicated rims too. Anyhow, they came off in favour of a set of Minilite things with some proper rubber. Goodyear, I think.

Yes, oriental I reckon. It's heavy and cold to the touch so I wondered about ebony.

Sloe Gin?

Aye Bomma, Denovos were the thing, also available on the Rover P6. There's a concourse 1275GT doing the rounds with a set of pristine originals on, looks very unusual these days. First Mini to have 12'' wheels from new too.

Sloe gin = fast gin drunk at a more sedate pace. Goes down well with an excess of Christmas Toblerone

Lovely old thing the Miss Norfolk's 1275GT was though. Aside of the run flat tyres, I think it had stripey seats too? I seem to recall it had a radio / tape player fitted (?) beneath the passenger's dashboard shelf.

Pioneer thing it was. Might have been a Panasonic, thinking about it. Anyhow, it ate my 'London Calling' tape Sodding thing.

'All Mod Cons' by The Jam survived though, even after leaving skidmarks outside the Old Bell in Marham.

Yay, go the Eighties. Oh, and the handle came off the boot in Roy's Of Wroxham's car park. Premature circlip failure IIRC.
