The "is this still available?" messages are usually sent in error. I've had a few people message me "yes" when I wasn't aware i'd asked them the question in the first place.
Facebook is free, easy to post and typically get quick sales. The best thing about it is how ebay are losing business to them so have started to offer promotions with £1 final value fees - their 10% fees are obscene in my opinion so it's nice the greedy b

I put half a dozen garden edging strips on "free buyer to collect" for some reason the "buyer" gave me a tenner 
, I didn't turn it down but I just try and avoid land filling stuff unnecessarily if I can help it.Got rid of a few things no issues apart from the "is it still available" clickers.
I bought a superb dog crate this week. It was listed as 2nd hand, if he'd listed it as new I wouldn't have called him a liar when I went to pick it up.
We messaged him and said we'd take it at asking price (50 euros), never bothered negotiating as I needed one and it'd have cost me more than twice that to buy it locally. We agreed to meet at a local cafe at 10.30am. Turned up at 10.25 and he was there already. He helped me lift it into my car, job done in 60 seconds and couldn't be happier.
I tried to sell a car recently and it was the opposite.
It was a 208, I listed it for 10,500 euros. I included a link to the Portuguese auto trader with filters on it to only show 208's of the same year, engine, and mileage within 10,000km of mines. I priced mines 1000 euros less than the cheapest one in that list. I done a good description and loads of pictures, I felt the ad was pretty good and covered everything that needed to be mentioned.
I got loads and loads of messages from car dealers, some of them not disclosing that. One wanting it for his wife but only has 6000 euros but can pay today etc. I don't mind being lowballed but don't lie to me. Also if you're going to low ball me then do me the courtesy of getting that offer in there within 30 seconds so I can politely decline and we can both move on.
One arse wasted 40 minutes of my time asking question after question to then offer me 6500 euros. 3000 euros less than I had already been offered. I was getting so pissed off with them by that point that I just said sure okay, can you meet me after work tonight at 10pm in a location that was an hours drive from him. Then put my phone on silent and went to bed.
I've also used it to get rid of a bunch of cheap stuff I didn't want. Just posting it with free collection. I don't like wasting stuff I don't want any more if someone else can use it. The amount of people who're shameless enough to expect free delivery on something thats costing them nothing at all is ridiculous. Though they're at least far easier and quicker to rule out than the car time wasters.

Its often used by people doing bulk selling of household goods
They may list up some items in a big photo then a few individual ones. The advert will be headlined free then in the text the items will be listed with description and "offers"

I suspect it may be that it was a phone that perhaps attracts people wanting to try and pass it on and maybe other items are easier but personally I wouldn't bother again, nor would I look to buy something from the marketplace.
Local selling groups seem to be a little different as items are often within a few miles of where you live. Kids toys seem to be a decent shout.

3 years ago i was looking to sell some stuff (getting divorced) and tried the Schpock app. I had some nice stuff a £400 when new gas bbq, single bed and luxury matress, both put up for £150 and some other stuff like bikes £50, slabs £20, pressure washer £50. Not once did i get an offer that was even half of the asking price.
I gave up after a couple of weeks and tried facebook marketplace, all sold within 2 weeks for asking, or close to asking price, £130 for bbq and bed iirc, and to nice people who all came to collect when the said they would.

I've found that offering anything for free, creates more hassle than anything else. Always, without fail i will be bombarded with messages asking me to deliver to the worst estates in Sheffield.
At the weekend i sold a perfectly good petrol mower on Facebook. Had it up for £50 for a few weeks, and reluctantly took £30 just to get rid of it
2 hours after they collected, they're messaging me again to say its rattling and now won't start. Oh, and they've been drinking so could i come and get it and refund their money. On the assumption it had genuinely blown up and i sold them a dud, i agreed as it was only a couple of miles away.
You can imagine the rest.
Luckily for them, the machine had managed to cut most of their 2 foot tall grass before presumably hitting a hidden manhole / kids bike buried in the lawn. Whatever they hit was sufficient to crack the heavy metal blade boss and shear the woodruff key on the flywheel, the forces involved must have been huge. Of course, i had to clear a bins worth of grass from inside the machine before i could even begin to look at it.
Fortunately i was able to fix the machine with some other parts i had lying around, but TBH i can't be bothered to try selling it again knowing that the next punter will probably try the same thing.
Oh, best people to sell to is anyone from Eastern Europe. Always turn up when agreed, no haggling and totally pain free. Perhaps i should start to advertise in Polish or something !

I have bought a couple of things and sold a couple of things and never had a problem. Had the usual people asking if it was still for sale then not respond when I reply confirming that it is but also not had anyone try and offer me stupidly low amounts. But the most expensive thing I have sold on there is about £300 though so I guess the problem may be worse the higher the value and the more haggling people try and do.
I used marketplace for the first time this weekend (normally use eBay) as the items were bulky.
2 as new bedside cabinets - with an hour I’d get 20 messages, and they were collected the following day without any issues (think I’d oryxes too low but wanted to get rid of them).
The other was a well used office desk that had been in my garage for years and was free - gone in an hour and easy.
Will use again....

You have to realise that most of these apps are the equivalent of a car boot sale, and thus the clientele and the offers are going to be less than optimal. Everything, no matter if it’s a pencil or a MacBook faberge egg, it’s 50p to them.
I’ve moved a couples these last few years. The first time we wanted to get rid of stuff, we went to the large car boot sale. I kinda knew what it was going to be like, but getting weirdos rooting around your car boot at 550am as you’re trying to unpack your stall is irritating at best. Then you’re stuck in there for most of the morning as you can’t get out. And out of all that you might make £80-100 if you’re lucky.
This second time round, I’ve rung a local charity. 10-15 bags of clothes and homewares (probably get another 100 or or at a car boot), they are apparently coming round tomorrow. I’d rather have the value of no clutter and helping a local homeless charity than fighting with the local underclass.
