I work in an office where conference/skype calls are commonplace. Why do people insist in speaking at twice their normal volume when participating? No self-awareness whatsoever.
This post is brought to you from the breakout area.
I think it's human nature / hard-wired into us, that if the person appears not to be hearing you properly or is indistinct then you tend to speak up / talk louder. In conf calls it's often due to mic gain / quality / distance from mouth. Or speaker volume. This post is brought to you from the breakout area.
I have to make a conscious effort not to speak loudly when on the phone, for example.

Yep. I realised I did it a long time ago (hearing others) and now consciously speak quietly. Others just have no awareness. The stupid thing is people have nice headsets, wireless headphones etc. with great sound quality so the need to shout like Dom Joly really isn't there.washingitagain said:

I HATE going,
I hate waiting with other mouth breathing cretins! Normally for at least 45mins to an hour.
I hate the st job they all do cause seemingly none of them have ever attended any sort of barbering course! (1 guy told me "Oh I'm just filling in to today" Another "Yeah well I'm a DJ really" ) I mean most tradespeople will have done a course in electrics or plumbing or whatever!
I HATE having to make small talk not knowing (or caring) anything about the butcher with the scissors!
I hate the ego a lot of them seem to have!
I hate the ambience of most of them. 1 barber near me, had profanity filled gangsta rap playing loudly! At 3pm! When there were kids in the place! The rest all look run down ste. OR they are excessively poncy and want to rub all manner of "treatments" into my hair and have a booking system that means you have to think 2 weeks in advance and that's £40 please PLUS tip!
I hate that it seems all they want to do is advertise they do skin fades. I'm fourty fking one I don't want a sodding skin fade! Or to look like some hipster who thinks he's a lead actor in Peaky Blighters!
and
I HATE that 99.9999% of them don't take cards. So I have to get cash out and then break it down to pay the "tip" which is just expected after they've done another st cut!
I sometimes see guys sat in ladies places like Toni&Guy, RUSH etc and wonder why they do it, it'll be 3 times the price and there's no guarantee it'll be any better! Is it just to talk to an often attractive lady?

sideline, I actually like the barbers that I go to and have been going there for the last 10 years or so, amusingly enough because it was recommended to me by my old boss who said he went there and the girl who cut his hair had the biggest knockers he'd ever seen, he reckoned she was single and was trying to set me up. snip

I duly went in and 10 years later, I've still never seen this girl working at the shop or have any idea who she is.

One benefit is you have an appointment so hardly any wait time. Although my barber has just moved to online booking slots which is brilliant.Edited by S1KRR on Wednesday 18th December 14:53
Have to agree on the ego thing. One I've been to a few times is quite small and I noticed the owner basically does a floorshow for the whole day being the constant centre of attention. Everyone has to smile along at his wisdom and wit. Maybe it was just me thinking I'd wish he'd shut up about West 'am.

Companies like Shell not paying corporation tax, supposedly due to them getting rebates for decommissioning old rigs in the North Sea

Why the hell are these hugely profitable companies receiving tax rebates for decommissioning their old equipment ? Surely decommissioning costs were built in to their lifecycle costs when they were built ? Should we all apply for tax refunds when we have to get rid of a broken washing machine, or scrap an old car ?

Because expenses "incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the trade, profession or vocation" can be offset against Corporation Taxhttps://www.ft.com/content/933fe2b8-20ee-11ea-92da...

I would imagine that the costs of decommissioning old rigs qualifies.
(I can't read the link you posted as it is behind a paywall)
It's the same reason that the likes of Vodafone didn't pay any Corporation Tax for several years. The government of the day stiffed them for £millions for 3G licenses, and then were aghast when Vodafone offset those costs against tax.
HMRC sued, claiming these were not allowable. They lost.

Is there NO situation where phone zombies will refrain from checking their phones.
Does your other half not check hers over your shoulder whilst you're pounding away? Is there NO situation where phone zombies will refrain from checking their phones.
The fact that searching for "OBD reader" brought up no results whatsoever on PH search
EDIT: Just to make my irritation even more unfounded, I searched again, and all is well! No apparent explanation for why the search failed and then worked just fine 2 minutes later!

I found that earlier on yesterday when searching for a book title I might or might not have posted. When it didn't find the word "thunderstorms", I search for "firenza", which I know I must have mentioned at least once. Then, as you say, later on it was fine. Reindexing something, maybe, and forgot to put a message on.EDIT: Just to make my irritation even more unfounded, I searched again, and all is well!
