The colleague at the next desk to mine is leaving and is going through her desk clearing out loads of old tat that she's accumulated, but offering it up in case it is useful. I've obtained a ruler and a box of stapes. Very rare!

but she then had one of those promotional keyrings with a trolley token in, useful at our local Tesco, and then immediately realised what she'd given me, and taken it back. Less than 10 seconds.. outrageous.

When I was a student I had no money. I used to walk past Subway everyday on Gloucester Road in Bristol. It smelled so bloody good.

After a while I'd saved up a fiver and bought a steak and cheese footlong. I then immediately tripped out of the door and dropped it on the most filthy bit of pavement I've ever seen in my life right next to a tramp. I didn't even get a single bite out of it.

stloads of people saw, including all my mates, who laughed unrelentingly for about an hour afterwards.

Good thread!

Mine is a Next silk tie.

I bought it back in the 80's along with a sharp double breasted suit. Took them home, took the tie out of the bag to show the then girlfriend, dropped it straight into her mug of coffee. Ruined.

I purchased a ceramic watch and two hours later my wife closed the car door on it.

I bought a Sierra estate as a cheap smoker off a trader pal who had taken it in p/x. I had been back in my workshop about 10 minutes when a chap walked in needing a cheapie as the gearbox had gone on his car. He had walked onto my pals pitch as i walked off and been pointed in my direction. We agreed a price and he left a deposit. He collected it about two hours later and owned it for five years! Best car I never drove.

A Yoyo. Had it for my birthday when I was 5 or 6, unwrapped it took it out its packaging passed it to my uncle who said "I'll show you". A flick to the floor and smash, the string was to long. The tight useless short legged tt didn't offer any type of replacement.

Toilet seat lid of all things.

I had just fitted a new toilet in my newly purchased flat and stood back to admire my work. I put the seat and the lid down so I could sit on it to make it easier to see the fixings underneath the sink, which was the next job to do. As soon as I sat down the lid cracked completely in half. Didn't even get a chance to use the loo before it broke!
Many toilet lids nowadays aren't. They are described by the manufacturers as "covers" and aren't designed to be sat on!

Watering nozzle, hozelock style but not actually made by the brand IYSWIM. About £3 off ebay.
Unpackaged, connected to the hose pulled the trigger and the end just exploded into about 5 pieces.
Tried to put it back together but water just leaking out of every gap so threw it in the bin.
Total time between landing on the door mat and the bin maybe 3 minutes.
I really must stop buying tat off ebay.

I ordered a Ring doorbell from Amazon, expecting it to be, well, the size of a doorbell. This thing arrived, it was huge, about the size of a pack of smokes.

Returned by post within an hour I reckon.
If this was mumsnet we'd be innundated with similar stories buying clothes online.

Look on the bright side, it saved you the bother of leaving it out over a cold, frosty night to 'detonate' it.

Drunk purchase down the pub, an S type Jag for my Mrs to learn to drive in (she wanted an automatic)

Delivered to the house next day with the V5, Mrs didn't like it as it looked old. 10 minutes later my lodger came home asking who owned that lovely Jag, I said you if you want it and he paid me £500 more than I paid.

I think I bought the same thing, but instead of exploding, I had the hose laid out on the garden with the nozzle closed, walked back to turn on the tap, and as the pressure built up the new nozzle just disappeared into space. I checked all the bushes and looked over the fences into the neighbours garden, but it just vanished.

Granted, it had been sat in the garage for a few weeks, so not quite as short lived as yours, but probably a similar time of usability.

-2 days.
Not sure if this counts, I had paid a deposit but not the remaining sum. My first car was a Sierra Sapphire 2.0i GLS which looked rather nice in plain non-metallic black. It got written off by the valeting guy 2 days before I was due to take delivery of it.
