My unpopular opinion this morning is that you should never eat in a restaurant that has laminated menus. Doubly so if they show pictures of the food.
That suggests that those sort of restaurants are popular. They aren’t, so how can your opinion be unpopular?

Seems reasonable but I wished for such a menu once many years ago when I ordered dinner in some backwater somewhere far away (can't even remember which country it was) and I received a hoof for my efforts.
Hoof of what, a horse's hoof ?

I need it mansplained

I must confess, BBP, that I never really found out what it was. I dejectedly pushed it around the plate for a while before caving in and scrounging from my friends who'd ordered safer (or at least more identifiable) options.

That’s not unpopular with me, I don’t like laminated menus, but pictures of the food is a total no-no, they are normally the mark of a chav burger, egg, and chips nosebag heaven.

Menus with pictures wouldn't be so bad if the food you receive bore any resemblance to the picture that you chose it from. Exhibit 1: A Big Mac.

Same applies to smells. Burger vans at outside events must have some kind of smell generator which is entirely separate from the food they're cooking.

The current trend for taking valuable road space that is in continuous use by motor vehicles and reserving it instead for the occasional cyclist, should be stopped and, indeed, reversed! The obvious increase in congestion and pollution so caused should be recognized for the significant problem that it is.

You've been to Bayswater haven't you? They hate motorists they do.

town near me has a big food market surrounded by bars and restaurants. A few of them have started selling beers in plastic bottles for people to loiter around and drink in the sun, like a massive beer garden. That way the bars can avoid having anyone come into their premises at all, which is a lot safer for everyone. A bit of street mess (that then gets cleared) is far better than allowing people into small rooms, to sit surrounded by perspex sheets and partitions with fk all atmosphere. My unpopular opinion is that there is nothing wrong with having a beer with a mate in the street, as long as keep distanced from other people etc. People just seem to categorise this as either like a tramp drinking meths on a park bench, or actively causing the good old 'second peak' which some people can't wait to say "i told you so!" about.

I have no problem with the general premise of your opinion, apart from the implications of "A bit of street mess that then gets cleared" - are there no bins? I hate littering. To me, it just indicates that someone doesn't care about their surroundings, and the surroundings of their fellow citizens, and expects others to clear up after them.

yes of course there are. However for one thing they got full pretty quickly, and for another you can't control what every single person does and some dicks may just leave them on the floor. My point was not "littering is fine"... my point was more that even the somewhat unavoidable bit of littering by some is better than going indoors and forcing staff to breathe peoples' air and wash their glasses.

Don't get me wrong, there was things to be improved such as they could have had added 'pissoire' type things to make it easier for people to use the loo, and they could have added big plastics recycling bins or something.

I agree with this, but it has two problems. Firstly, the weather, it needs to be sunny, or at least not raining / blowing a gale for this to work and based on what we’ve had near me this weekend, that’s unlikely to say the least. Secondly, not everyone is as sensible as you are describing. The hotter the day, the more people drink and the more tempers fray, especially amongst the youth.

I’m not saying this approach shouldn’t happen, as it’s definitely a lot better than the weird Perspex pubs being suggested, but there will be an impact and probably the negative impact will be the one reported on.

It's because the BBC have a massive hole in their schedule because Glasto has been cancelled.
They have loads of stuff made from when he died so they are just repeating that.
I like him, many don't, they will move onto something else next week.

yea i guess like anything it depends on a few things such as people being reasonable and decent, good weather etc. Much like enjoying an outdoor pint was before COVID even happened! Media loves a scandal and to be honest i think this is what drives reporting, and if someone doesn't agree it gives the a hook to latch onto, and to blame people over. The thing that jumps out to me is that there are far more people than expected who seem to be genuinely worried about coming outdoors now. Prolonged stress has generated fear, which is somewhat understandable, but it's paramount that people break that, as it has far greater risk to the economy than the lockdown created. I've seen people on social media even in the food industry saying they won't go to a restaurant till next year, for example.

it's a bit harder to think about how to navigate the world now, and some people find it too hard, and just opt to withdraw. It's not healthy (despite it being 'COVID-safe'), and people need to get a balanced view of risk back again, somehow.

Two different things there. We had options before around the pub. Go for a pint, if it’s sunny sit outside by heading for a pub with a beer garden, if the weather turned, or was crap head indoors and stand / sit wherever. The second part is a problem now, it’s more akin to booking at a popular restaurant, then nipping out for a pint or six.

People choosing not to go out out is their choice, you might not agree with them, but they’ll probably disagree with you too. I don’t see many being that concerned with going outside their homes anymore, just maybe not out for a night on the town.

Even as a cyclist I wish they'd get rid of cycle lanes

I never use them as they start and stop too abruptly and also double as gutters and drains where all manner of broken glass and plastic ends up

Also met with sloping forehead dragged knuckle waving when not using them for the above reasons, indicative of a general lack of respect for fellow road users of all sizes
