In the next few months I will start commuting by car after a couple of years working abroad, so I am looking for cars. My plan was to spend little and keep costs down.
Then I got to reading P4cks readers rides about his Evora which reminded me how much I always wanted one.
I have kept half an eye on Evora prices for a few years and it seems that at the bottom of the market they have only depreciated maybe £5k in the last 3-4 years.
When I then got to thinking about car ownership it's pretty obvious that the biggest cost of owning a car is depreciation.
I cant think of another car that could be realistically used as a daily that depreciates so slowly so maybe a used Evora is a great choice.

A quick flick through the forum here and over on Seloc suggests reliability isn't a major concern but clutches may be a problem on earlier cars and Evora like to eat tyres.

Am I crazy for thinking this is a good idea? Any other pitfalls I am missing? Do you think I convince the wife this is a money saving exercise? I guess I would be looking at cars around £28k.

Edit to add: I guess my question is can the Evora be a cheap way of motoring given its glacial depreciation?

I daily mine and it’s totally doable. I’d say it’s cheap for this kind of car, but general servicing and things like tyres and insurance are obviously quite a bit than more than a Golf mile-for-mile.

How many miles do you think you’ll be doing?

Biggest pitfall you’ll notice is getting out of the car in narrow spaces. Not much else tbh.

Thanks, good to know. I would be doing 10-12K a year so relatively low numbers. I had a quick look at blackcircles and tyres seem to be available from about £150ish for premium brands. My last commuting car was an infinity and the runflats on that were £250. Servicing was equally eye watering too.
I haven't checked insurance but at 20 years no claims and a medium ranked postcode I would hope it is not too outrageous.

I'm used to wide doors and tricky access, and luckily for a tall (and old) guy I am still pretty flexible! bounce I got he knack of getting in and out of my vx220 pretty quickly when i had it a few years ago.

I daily'ed mine from 2011-2014 without problems - 80 miles a day, 5 days a week

Tyres will only be an issue if you drive like an idiot

Watch out for dealer parts prices and availability.

Some prices are mental, £50 per spark plug IIRC, instead I bought exactly the same plugs from Lexus at £69 for all 6 smile

Poor parts stocking can make life a pain, some bits seem to take weeks.

Thanks everyone, Sounds like it is entirely doable then.

Finding a well looked after early car thats had the clutch and gear linkages done sounds like it could be as cheap as running a newer golf gti.

A quick look suggest leasing a golf over 2 years would cost £11k, plus servicing, so assuming I bought a £28k Evora, and expect it to depreciate £5k over 2 years, that would give me £6k to deal with any maintenance.

Man Maths at its best!!

I might (regretfully) be selling my Aspen white launch edition if you’re interested.

It's a great idea. I have a few friends who have daily Evoras and there's no real downside to it.

Early cars price should reflect whether the clutch has been done. It's about £2500 at an indy.

Check the aircon works well. Compressors are pricey.

Cars with all the packs (Premium, Sport, Tech) are the most desirable and easiest to punt on. 2+2 easier to sell than 2+0.

Do it, they're incredibly cheap to run if you're resourceful in parts sourcing on the rare occasion something breaks.

I don't daily mine but it's totally doable as it's very comfortable to drive.

If you buy an early NA you want to make sure it has the MY12 gear linkages (mine does) and a new clutch/throwout bearing. Other than that there's very little else that'll go wrong with them.

I don't daily mine, but it'd be easy enough to - as mentioned, doors and access are probably the biggest issues, they need to be opened wide and there's a large sill to get over.

But otherwise, comfy, relatively practical with +2, boot carries more than it seems. Also, it gets over speedbumps and angled ramps really easily, which is something that was a massive inconvenience with the Elise biggrin

I'm getting almost 30mpg in mixed driving, too! (N/A).

Yep it's a keeper, I'd be a bit gutted if I had to get rid of it having done all the work to make it perfect.

Ah yes I had a VX for ten years off and on... fantastic little things and I'd have another in a heartbeat (as well as the Evora and Clio V6 I hasten to add!)
