Looks like the new iPhones will be getting improved batteries.

https://www.macrumors.com/2019/08/21/digitimes-on-...

Could be an early launch this year.

Currently have a 6s+ and 6s for me and the Mrs which are rapidly approaching 4 years old. The 6s is dying gracefully and has already had an Apple battery replacement so that needs to be changed. Mine is actually OK but as it's a company asset I feel the urge for a new device.

The Mrs doesn't get on with the new sizes so having looked at the line up, the only option I see is an iPhone 8 - or am I wrong and have missed something?

Based on the new battery sizes I'll probably go for a XS. I've potentially got a work trip being lined up to the US in October so I'm thinking of getting the devices out there to save a bit of cash. Anyone done this and can you do the trade-in at an Apple store out there for your current phones?

Sorry for the partial thread hijack...

They really need 5G.

I'm running a 5SE, no sign of a replacement so I'll be sticking with what I've got.

ETA. AND it has a headphone jack, which is a must for me.

Seriously? I’ve had a PAYG iPhone 6s for nearly 4 years, but im switching to the Samsung S10+ or Note 10+ as I don’t see enough from the newest iPhones to keep me in the ecosystem phone wise (still have a load of Macs) that I have invested in for so long and for so much money.

Now that’s cleared up to prove I’m not a fanboy, who even still uses headphone jacks? They’re old tech, legacy devices simply made to cater to baby boomers and everyone over the age of 30 because they won’t be in with the times. I use a pair of Bowers & Wilkins PX - and with all the gimmicks switched off, and using a premium audio source such as Tidal, the sound quality is astonishingly good and far better than a pair of £20 wired cans that most would use. A true audiophile wouldn’t walk around with a DAC and over ear cans and a ton of wires. Live with the times, grandpa.

I tend to keep going until I see something I want, the 7 was available when I bought this but really the headphone jack was the decider. Recently the eye watering prices were a put off for what is essentially a two way radio with a few bells and whistles added. I do look at the new offerings with interest to see what will get me to shift.

The last release was too expensive (I prefer top of the shop stuff). I am hoping the next release are more realistic, who knows but Tim Cook seems to be in it for the profits.

In the Apple eco system myself and happy with it. I use the headphone jack a lot. Don't really care what you think.

It will be interesting to see real world battery usage on this batch and I hope they are getting better.

I was pondering this next release but I might go for a new one time after this one but that depends on the next OS past 13. 13 is still quick and snappy on the 6s although my iPad is not getting the new OS. Probably get obsoleted soon. The new OS needs devices on the same version for many features, might be iPad next. iMac will run the next OS and probably the one after. Might be next year to keep the costs down.

Problem is they are all middling along with no killer features, three lenses or some other gumpf must have the gullible fall for. 5g is not even in the want list for me. I am not sure how it will develop and be of any use to me and seems to be a version of wifi people are trying to flog with no clear way of use.

Seems battle of the camera's is a big thing at the moment and I find camera phones a bit rubbish.

I normally watch this

Usually some insight as to what is coming along. More than anything, pricing will be interesting.

There's not really been a big leap forward in smartphone development for a number of years now, so I'd tend to agree.

I’ve seen rumours of a new Watch touted on Mashable etc - has anyone else seen anything on this? I was planning on getting a Series 4, but obviously if there’s a new one around the corner it’s more tempting to hold off.

If they do release one I hope it looks a little more discrete.

I’m hoping they release a smaller version of the iPhone. The 4 was the perfect size for me as it fitted into my shirt pocket and I could close the button to keep it secure.

I am in the exact boat as you. However, I have read that there could be a camera on the new 5, making facetime readily available.

I've never facetimed anyone in my life, so, I was going to wait for the 5 to get announced and hopefully see a price drop and purchase from there.

PS - I also just upgraded my phone with EE, £50 quid down, for a 256gb iPhone with, unlimited calls, texts, 60GB data and 6 months free apple music - £59 p/m.

Seemed a steal to me!

Curious but what do you actually need 5G support for?

If anything prices will go up, best case remain flat. Apple are a USD company and the pound has got weaker in the last year.

I’ve had a new iPhone every year bar a brief flirtation with Samsung since the 3GS to the X. Didn’t find anything compelling last year and not expecting to this year either.

Rumours of a 16 inch MPB in the same footprint as the current 15 inch are more interesting. I have the original retina MBP since 2012 and it’s still running fine now that I’ve done a clean install. It could do with a new battery and I’ve hardly used it since I got a 12.9 inch iPad Pro with keyboard end of last year, but shiny shiny...

You'd expect £300 headphones to be better than a £20 set.
Quite why someone would waste so much on such a device I have no idea. I suspect it's just Millennials with more money than sense that buy them.

I think lots of oldies are asking for a decent phone in a small form factor (iPhone SE2 rumours have been around for a while), but the people who buy new phones mostly want them to use as their main screen to watch films, etc. so phone companies aren't going to be making a small phone any time soon frown
My iPhone 8 is about as big as I want to go, when it breaks and I get a new phone I'm not sure where I can get a modern phone that's a similar size.
Sony used to do small phones but even their Xperia XZ2 Compact phone is 135mm tall (iPhone 8 is 138mm).

Yeah, I suppose but I though they had messed it up with the 1000 bit and they would not drop under that but sales apparently dropped, however the profit covered the drop. Interesting to see which way the non phone OS is going now it is split away.

SSD prices are coming down, but Apple seem loath to do much about it. 150 quid for 192, on the phone Different I know) but pretty sure the prices have come down on the desk tops?

The point is that most people will see the same or better sound quality from wireless headphones because not everyone will be investing in a pair of Sennheiser high end wired cans. The average person will be using headphones in the £20-50 range, and believe me, the acoustic difference will be minimal. I don’t understand why people start bandwagoning on the loss of a legacy port. Harks back to the days when everyone insisted that the floppy disk was the way to go, the days when people said they wouldn’t buy Jobs’ new iPhone but stick to their Motorola, the days when people probably turned their noses up at the invention of the microwave, it always happens.

As for the millennial comment, I am far from one. I know from experience that millennials want shiny things like AirPods with not much acoustic quality. The PX are for audiophiles who don’t want to carry around a DAC but can benefit from using one. As this is Pistonheads the same logic applies to cars. Why do people buy a Range Rover over a Kia Sportage? Because the Range Rover offers higher standards for a higher price.

The vast majority of consumers of the iPhone and the new Samsung Note 10 won’t be listening using wired earphones. Why develop for a market that doesn’t exist? If required, you can have one - there are dongles out there that will do the job for you. Consumer research, and consumer demand. This is why AirPods/Galaxy buds are out there now. If you don’t want those, you are free to buy a dongle. Not only increases profits, but allows research to go elsewhere and simplification. Technology moves with the times. Otherwise, we would all be having phones with flash storage as well as floppy disk storage. If you don’t like it, there are other options.

You have clearly have had that shirt with a small pocket and a button for a while now.

Why not upgrade your shirt and a new iphone? Win win.

Especially on getting a new shirt!
