Single mum I know of, does the usual 16 hours per week bar work on minimum wage with the rest of her income ''topped up'' by benefits.

A quick look on her facebook page shows the kind of expenditure and lifestyle she seems to be able to afford, including...

Dozens of pairs of designer shoes.
Whole walk in wardrobe (well, spare bedroom) of designer clothes
All the latest tech, i-phones, i-pads etc
Extensive and expensive ''ink''
Regular nights out, city breaks, glamping trips.
Monthly 400 mile round trip to her ''lip woman''
Recently just passed driving test and immediately went out and bought a 16 plate fiesta st line
Set up her own make up brand, which appears to have been (rather predictably) a non-viable business venture and is more of a deluded vanity project.

It sure is a tough life on benefits for these single parents.

Threads on this sort of topic always make me laugh when they crop up.

From your description above, it sounds like the person you know is living a dream lifestyle. Similarly, the OP wonders where he has gone wrong in working for a living.

If you are really that envious, there's a quick solution. Quit your job, sign on and you too could be in a similar position.

What's stopping you?

Well that’s not the point is it??? It’s wrong that taxpayers money has been consistently wasted like this on gambling, etc. It’s funding/perpetuating a failing lifestyle.

I'm not envious and it's certainly not my idea of a ''dream lifestyle'' but yes it would be nice to have that level of disposal income along with the free time to spend it, but unfortunately for me I've not chosen to have kid(s) I can't afford so I'm entitled to fk all (that applies to couples as well as single parents)

Are you saying that it's perfectly acceptable that benefits should allow someone that level of expenditure and lifestyle?.

I work for the NHS in a community mental health team. I go and visit people at home and support them with independent living. Most of my patients are in local authority housing, which means the rent is paid for by Housing benefit/UC. The rest of their income is ESA and PiP. Last week one of my patients told me his money has just been increased to about £1100 per month. He spends this on fags and speed and Costa toasted sandwiches. I’m just helping another guy manage his debt. I’ve done a budget plan with him. He has £1300 per month in his pocket but is always skint. He says he doesn’t know where the money goes and has had to rely on food parcels from the local food bank.
My issue is not so much with the amount they receive-it is up to them how they spend their money, rather, I wish my wages were similar. I take home £1100 per month. I pay £650 per month rent and then the rest is for food and bills etc. I would LOVE to have £1300 in my pocket every month after my rent and bills are paid.

Anyway...rant over.

Spot on my point. That’s absolutely on topic... it is not fair and your case is on point! off course others will argue all this people are victims of the system... poor them. The system is rotten and is going to continue. In society we have children, elderly, poor, rich... then we have parasites... both rich and poor but mostly pretending to be poor so they don’t have to work. Having over £1000 in your pocket after bills is not poverty line in U.K.

How do you know how much money this woman earns or has available to her?

Are you guessing?

Genuine question because all you describe above sounds well beyond what you could afford on 16 hours a week NMW plus a benefit top up.

Might be supported by parents or other family members?

Or,
A long time ago when I was in my 20’s I was skint. A friend of mine had a space on a big car lot in Manchester and he offered to speak to the “iffys” who came around regularly and could get me the latest hifi or big TV, as good as new but possibly with a short power cable and definitely no warranty or instructions but dirt cheap.
Not saying everyone does this but not everyone shops at Curry’s

Quick hands up then. How many of the posters on here have visited a food bank and 'walked out with carrier bags of food'?
There was a thread a while back about food banks. IIRC there was a poster who used to work at one and in his experience the main people who seemed to really need them were not the professional unemployed but those who were in work and lost their jobs for whatever reason. Unfortunately, they still had the overheads of regular life (rent/bills etc) but now fk all income and only eligible for the absolute minimum of benefits.

This woman is what the hidden black economy is all about, ebay shop, Sunday markets, youtube people getting stuff bought for them.

Go on there and see how many large chested women are doing try-ons, and then click the views, most of them are over 100k, earning them hundreds of pounds per video.

People have money to burn, I occ watch a few gaming youtubers, have never been inclined to send them money, but you see people sending 10 20, 30 even 100 nicker at the drop of a hat, it's insane! For watching people play games you like.

It's the easiest way to make money, trying on cloths for goodness sake, if you are a woman, have decent boobs, do it, you will never need to work again! It's like doing cam work without being naked, respect, none.

Add that to ebay shops, markets, probably a bit of "buying and selling" Perhaps snort and some other stuff form the hubby, and its easy to rake in 3 or so grand a month tax free to live like a king.

I hate pikies, but at least they attempt to work for it!

Apologies if I’ve missed something but have you posted in the wrong thread?

Which woman are you referring to?

I often wonder why something along these lines has not been implemented by now.

And lastly have a job lined up that no existtng person resident in the UK could do
No doubt the snowflakes will be out wring hands bleating on human rights
No they moan that only there cousin back home is willing to work for below minim wage skilled enough to cook curry/ pizza / fried chicken or has some terribly obscure qualification or the needed years of vital experience.

Except someone on minimum wage is highly likely to be receiving benefits anyway.
Not always the case. I work with people who, like me, don't get any benefits other than child benefit (which we would receive on wages higher than minimum too).

Tbh I'm pretty sick of all these gambling ads on TV, along with those phone in roulette shows etc. Then if you go to any poor location, it's full of paddypower, ladbrokes, coral etc.

It seems designed to take money from the desperate and the thick.

That said, I have bet a few times (mainly elections, and one boxing match) so I'm no doubt part of the problem. I was going to bet on a boxing match recently, but decided against it, as questioning whether I want to support it or not.

I recently watched a documentary on sports betting in Africa, and seems to be a big problem there too:

What's that got to do with benefits?

3k a month easy? How much do you make from it?
