Social media enabling people to bury themselves in echo chambers of their own making and all the disgusting effects thereof.

Ugly 'crossover' cars with big mouths, narcissism becoming the norm in politics and the media, TV entertainment's continual dive for the bottom disappearing into the mud at the bottom of Challenger Deep...

I'm going to take quite serious umbrage against that. Mobile 'phones invented nothing (and I remember my MD having an in car 'phone in the 1980s so we at at least 3 decades late to claim 'phones).

What about the Technical achievement of how much energy we now generate from wind? Saving kids in tunnels in Thailand.

Yes, some clever people have merged the concepts of phones, computers, faxes, videos, TVs, Newsgroups, copping off with the same or opposite sex or both at the same time into smaller and smaller and more expensiver devices, but has the 'phone really enhanced your life? I live in a mobile blackspot. I work where 'mobiles with cameras are not allowed. My life feels fine. A simple Nokia allows me to make "'phone calls" if I need some information. I'd suggest the thing that mobiles 'phones should be remembered for in the 2010s is becoming a bloody nuisance in our lives ("We're meeting at seven o'clock at the Sailors' Sphincter tonight remember for the pub crawl remember", "I'll text yopu when I'm on my way"....."OK, but we're on a timetable, we're in their for 20 minutes, then off to the Shepards Oxter...", "Yeah, fine, I'll follow you on Twitter....". 8:50pm "Oh, s, where are you, I'm in the Sailors' Sphincter and there are none of you twunts here.....and reception keeps coming and going") and stopping us treating each other as physical human beings. In fact their popularity shows that all walks of life use them and thus they are a device that has been dumbed down to appeal to the lowest end of the masses.

However, I must admit, nothing makes my day off to a better start when a person on their 'phone walks out of the local railway station I can see from my office window and nearly knocks over a cyclist on the pavement, which we seem to catch about twice a week on our works Cam for laughs at lunch!

In fact, thinking about it, three things to wind back from the 2010s to the 2000s to their original standards
a) Phones
b) Cyclists
c) Girly trouser hair rather than Extreme waxing

Doesn't matter. It's what they encapsulate that counts.

That is my point. It's the encapsulation of things that could be done otherwise, simpler, cheaper, easier, more reliably and with devices you still have that makes mobile 'phones seems so masturbari satiat se amicos suos, et impress. Glad you agree. You could do all the things you do in other ways, including, interacting in a civilised manner with your other human beings face to face etc.

You're right, mobiles are amazing!!!!!
1) The amount of bowel-detritus compressed into such a small space with form over function takes some beating. Possibly only bottom of the range Mercedes achieve a higher mass:volume ratio and have bigger tuwnts as owners. I say that having owned an 1980s Merc that was a nice simple car that drove thirty years ago, and then a 2016 Merc that drove lovely like, but just had loads of unnecessary carp (like the phone system) break.
2) They save people having to wear T-shirts saying "I'm a self absorbed tt and can't be bothered to speak to you face to face so let me Whats App you even though we're in the same pub".
3) At an old workplace, when Kathryn from accounts didn't realise how letting devices connect by Bluetooth worked we did get to see a video on her 'phone of her and her hubby up to some late night plastering which was quite good for morale.

As above greatest Technological achievement of Mankind is either:
a) the Manhatten Project (not the eventual bomb bit, though it would be good to gather up all the worlds mobile users in one spot, set of one of the remaining original bombs and see what it does to mobile reception, but all the other innovations and developments - e.g. the whole Gnatt charts side / progress scheduling / monitoring of project Management and lots of IT things, plus loads of metallurgy and IT came out the MHP).
b) As said above the race to the Moon, Saturn 5 probably wins as we know she got men there, but the Russians also developed quite a long way down the road, just fell at the final hurdle(s).

You're making me nostalgic. I haven't heard somebody so inexplicably furious at advances in mobile phone technology since the mid-2000s. biggrin

Just today, I used my phone to:
- quickly grab a photo of a poster with a useful phone number on it
- chat to some friends in Australia
- flick on the torch to see where the puddles were when walking the dog down an unlit path
- find a restaurant to meet up with family (all organised on mobile phones)
- share a document containing a bunch of information with multiple people
- show people at the pub where I was going on holiday
- show them photos I took at their wedding in the summer
- switch on the lights at home when the sun went down
- set the heating so the house was warm when I got back

Perhaps you carry a full size camera, a letter writing set, a torch, an atlas, a phone book and fifty seven photo albums with you at all times but I would say that's not cheaper, easier or more reliable than a phone, and it's no reason to be angry at people who appreciate the luxury of having it all in a handheld device.

I know some people love to pretend there was this super social world before mobile phones when every bus journey was full of chat and laughter but that's bks. I was there and nothing's changed, other than socialising is easier now because of the technology.

Although, if you find your friends prefer to browse their phones than speak to you... erm... well ... scratchchinbiggrin

Living in the future is awesome and most of it hangs off these small black rectangles.

Narcissism achieving great heights and being rewarded for it.

The unrivalled rise of the Smartphone - think about what phone you had in 2009 ?

The death of Plasma TV's
Physical media - DVD's Cd's etc diminishing in desirability. The rise of streaming services
The bdisation of small cars morphing into ever bigger models - Mini and Fiat 500 but others. The Mini case is tragic.
The rise and fall of big hair on girls
The amount of woman having large tatoo's
The self importance of UK political journalists who think they are the story rather than reporting it which leads me too..
The endless 24 hour news crap that is everywhere which has now been partially contributory to...………
The decline of Local news especially the printed variety
Nokia's decline in the early 10's - still a shock for some of us.
The widespread use of cannabis in the UK
The rapid rise in the use of Vaping cigarettes with people not really having a clue what it is they are breathing in.
The rise of Audi's by mid 20s speed merchants who previously would have been BMW boys
The use of fake lawns
The acceptance and now IMHO overkill of admitting / claiming you have mental health issues.
The rise in the UK of endless marches and civil sit downs in London. Way too much
The London Olympics which were a total triumph set against an expectation of disaster
The end of the VW Beetle even if the "new Beetles" were not real beetles

Same as every other decade:

Some political or economic decision that that will turn out to have been a terrible idea, with hindsight.

And we will all be blamed.

I bought a Nokia 8 a couple of years ago. Best phone I have ever owned. If they make the 10 waterproof I'll buy again.

This is a phrase that's slowly being utterly debased until it won't mean what it should any more.

People these days say 'the colour of my Nissan Qashqai is affecting my mental health' rather than saying they don't like it very much.

I think, when the 2010s go through their nostagalia phase in the 2030/40s the 'kids' in their 20s and 30s who either weren't there or two young to remember will look back and think:

"I can't believe the US voted for a Reality TV Star to be president"
"I can't believe they allowed so much propaganda"
"I can't believe our parents would believe everything they read because it was on social media"
"I can't believe everyone just drove around just pouring pollutants out the back right next to where people lived, worked, breathed".
"I can't believe everyone just told their entire life story to every dataminer on earth, on purpose".
"First to pop off...............2030, It's got to be Prince Phillip, Shirley?"
"Why do posters on PH say Shirley when they mean surely and no one corrects them / chastises them for it, Leslie who?"

I think you get my point.
There are a whole generation of kids plastering their facebooks and Instagrams with Depression, mental health and a sizeable amount of other statuses

Ronald Regan was an actor before the White House 1981
Arnold Schwarzenegger also became Governor 2003

Also Trump had a few cameo acting parts before reality tv.

What makes them all so different.
