Today. Couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of traffic and parking in Newcastle so jumped on the bus ... was 3 of us, £10 family day ticket with Arriva.

The journey was faster than I could have driven it and completely hassle free plus when we wanted to come home there was already a bus at the stand so there wasn’t even any waiting around.

For the first time in many years, Friday in London, it was clean, un-crowded and I didn't get stabbed!

Last summer me and the other half decided to go into our local town (3 miles) Sherborne on the local hopper type community bus (saves parking and a quiet couple of swift ones in the pub). I had a couple of pound coins in my hand (used to London charges) that will be £8.40 said the driver, no only the next stop please said I. Yes that's right he said £8.40. Now I've previously had to get a taxi back from Sherborne rail station and that only cost me £5.50.
You must live really off grid if you only have a community bus. They're provided just to help the most extreme cases get out of the house, to doctors, visit ill friends etc. Costs are high due to low density areas, hence low numbers usually using the facility.

I’m glad that it was a good experience for you, but you shouldn’t really be surprised that you didn’t get stabbed.
I’ve lived here all my life, and I’ve never been threatened, or seen anyone pull a knife in the street.
You can get on and off buses in London 7 days per week, and 365 days per year and not be in danger of being stabbed.
Unfortunately the media like to play up the stabbings that occur in London, usually between disillusioned youths, squabbling with someone from another postal code.
Then people who live in the boonies start to believe that every other person on London’s streets is out to stab them.

I was only joking.

I haven't been to London in years and the last few days went on the tube, bus, drove, walked in Balham, Brixton - great indoor market, Clapham and central. I enjoyed every minute and didn't feel threatened at all. The worst part of the trip was hitting a pothole and buckling a wheel.

The OP stated that this was the first time he didn't get stabbed!

However, Frank is telling the truth.

You are far more likely to be shot or blown up. wink

Airport one aside

Last year Spring/Summer I was seeing a girl who had connections to the bus industry. When she decided shed rather not continue seeing me, I vowed never to get on a bus again to spite her biggrin

This may not be 100% true. wink

It's probably thick end of a year now since I got on 1. Odd given there's multiple bus stops with multiple routes within 200m of my front door. Tend to drive, cycle or Train/Tube. Buses are just inconvenient in 95% of cases.

Around 20 years! The girlfriend at the time was working in Herne Hill on a year placement from university, and every Monday morning I would catch the bus from Herne Hill to Euston for £1.20, then walk to Kings Cross to catch the train back to Hatfield.

That was back in 1999 or 2000, haven’t been on one since.

I can absolutely guarantee that, as my cold, dead bones are carried towards my grave, you or Bennion will remind me of this....

We're using public transport (bus, tram) more often, since it's all free: buses, trains and trams. smile

Used to use them a bit pre covid but don't go anywhere now to need one! If we travel a bit further afield we tend to drive now where previously we might have caught the bus or tram to the station.

A lot actually, since Covid kicked in-and we downsized to one car; I take the bus to and from town with a backpack when needed for groceries.Works out pretty well. Apart from wearing a face mask which sucks.
