Within two weeks of the first lockdown last year there were radio adverts from Tesco telling listeners how much they were concerned about the safety of their customers, and that they were still open as normal. Profit at any cost.

I had a strange experience with it all last night. It was my 50th birthday yesterday, I didn't have anything planned as I dont do any of this covid bks at all. A mate rang up and said we should go out for a drink, I said no chance, I'm going no where near a pub or restaurant until its 100% normal again so he suggested going to his house for something to eat instead. I reluctantly agreed, work night and all that.

So anyway I got there, had a couple of cans and lo and behold half a dozen friends turn up for an impromptu party (I really hate this sort of thing). Anyway we all went out in Manchester for something to eat.

From what I could see when out and about - Manchester was absolutely heaving, no-one under 40 clearly gives a flying fk about the virus. One of my mates said the sights concerned him very much, he said "but they must be spreading it" no-one else was concerned in the least. We had to walk a couple of miles to find somewhere that had space which was in the more expensive bit.

I think only me and one other person gave false details when checking in, the concerned mate had the NHS app on his phone and checked in with that so he is a fully blown covidant now. We couldn't get in with a party of 8 so had to go as two groups and pretend we didn't know each other, this was despite a pair of identical twins in our possie with 1 in the first group and the other with us.

I asked to sit with the "strangers" who were in front of us in the queue as they seem nice and the waiter said look I know you are all together but you will have to split up, he said there are people in plain clothes walking past observing us and they might see you talking to other people, they had had one bking already apparently.

I said but if this carries on much longer you will all be out of business and he said "I know" glumly. It really is full on looney tunes and if people can't see the madness that it is must be blind or stupid or even both to be fair.

Went out to my local for the first time since .. think it was November?

Sat outside, had a few enjoyable beers with a load of the locals and had a good time.

Very enjoyable.

Every one socially distanced. Great.

You are deluded. - clearly you want people to starve.

If you can’t see through that you’re thick as st tbh. I’ll help you - they’re not saying the same about the local butcher are they.
Our local butcher never had to close at any point during the lockdown though.
This.
Butcher has been open the whole time. I'm not sure I understand what it is that I need to be seeing through to be honest? (And no I'm not planning on going to the pub but I don't understand what he's upset about)

We've got a small shopping centre close by us, and for the last few years it has been struggling a bit, with shops closing and staying empty long term. During the lockdown it has never been so busy, and some of the vacant units have been taken up again and are at present opening as restrictions ease.

The butcher told me that his takings are well up on previous years, and lots of people (like me) have said that we appreciate his efforts to stay open and serve the community and will continue to support him when lockdown is over. The greengrocer next door has been excellent as well, and echoes the theme of continued support post-pandemic.

Of course, we will have to see if it really works out that way, but our local shops have certainly been a big part of keeping this community together over the last year.

The thing is, people couldn't eat out and they weren't commuting into work so had to eat 3 meals a day at home.

I expect everyone will fall back into habits and hopefully some residual increase will subsist.

"Every one socially distanced" doesn't, from my perspective, scan with "very enjoyable"

Still, glad you enjoyed yourself smile

Lovely evening, relaxed, warm, order at the bar with mask, or via the staff who were constantly looking.
Arrived at opening @ 5.30, left @ 8, was full by then. Brilliant.

All that opportunity wasted with a Fosters and comedy ice cream head.

I had a meeting at the local yesterday (same local I've been going to almost daily for 4 years). They have a yard out the back where they've installed a big tent with about 10 tables and some patio heaters. To be fair, the experience was crap. I was due to meet up with the usual locals tonight but I bailed because I just don't fancy it. £4.50 a drink to sit in a tent. No thanks.

But £4.50 to sit in what essentially is someones front room is ok?

I don't get you? If I sit in a pub, it's a pub. It's warm, has atmosphere and pleasant surroundings. If I sit in a tent, it's a tent.

If I want to sit in front room (or a tent) I can sit in my own and save £3.50 a pint.

I feel sorry for the landlord but I don't enjoy being regimented, tracked and charged to sit outside in a tent for what is supposed to be a relaxing and spontaneous pasttime. Others will of course come to their own conclusions and that's fair enough.

Think about it. A pub is essentially the same as your front room. It has a comfy seat, heating on warm, nice lighting, a TV to watch football and a stereo with music you like on it.
Just others are allowed in and there is a barman to pour your drinks.

Everytime you booked a table for a meal you were tracked before.

Once the inital hype is over next week you will soon be able to walk in to virtually any pub and get a table. If you cant get into the first one just walk to the next.
