A mildly amusing spooky tale.

I had just bought sone chrome bezels to go round a couple of dials in my MGF. They were a push fit, so only secured by friction.

Late one night we were driving along the A75, allegedly one of the most haunted roads in the UK.

As we made progress I casually mentioned this fact to my wife. As I did, both bezels pinged out of position and fell to the floor.

We went a bit quiet after that.

Clearly heat,, expansion, vibration or something logical, but the timing was spot on.

In the second year at University I shared a house with 2 other lads, one of them had a highly strung girlfriend who’d stay quite regularly. Every now and again she’d go into hysterics and swear she had seen the ghost of a young girl on our stairs. I never saw anything. The last one out of the house on a night out would turn the cellar light on to freak her out when we got home pissed.

I was listening to an interview with Gary Numan on the radio a while back. He claims he saw a ghost once on the underground. He and his mate were just coming back from signing a record deal or something, and as they stepped off the train and started walking along the platform, there was an old man walking in front of them, who promptly turned and walked through a wall.

He refers to the guy in 'Are Friends Electric'.

Very interesting interview I thought.
There’s a man outside. Long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette” ?

42 years have passed since that came out. Gee, it was just so far ahead of its time.

Yes, that's the line. He said it shook them both up at the time.

His autobiography Revolution (2020) also mentions it. Really worth reading if you’re a GN fan.

I've had this on the tube a few times, having made thousands of journeys (I went to school on the tube, and then work). Along the platform there are various entrances and exits from the platform coming in from the side. If someone is ahead of you, they can turn, and appear to leave the platform, but when you get there , it's a solid wall. The entrance to the side tunnel is actually further ahead or back from where you thought you saw them leave. It's very odd, but nothing ghostly, just it can be tricky sometimes to get the correct perspective re distance on a tube platform. Maybe the shape of the tunnel, or the lighting.

Okay will add my own ‘experience’. Firstly to say I’m a deeply logical, sceptical person that always seeks to find the ‘scientific’ rationale for anything supernatural. I’m also an atheist, but this experience made me question a few of my core beliefs.

It happened the day after my mums death. Obviously my scientific spider senses naturally want to qualify that being in an emotional state, it’s far more likely that I would be open to being more suggestible around the supernatural - but I still feel what happened was beyond mere coincidence

The first incident happened in the evening after my mums death. It was a standing joke in our house that my uncle always turned up unannounced around meal times . My mum hated it - would go absolutely mental at the thought of having to reapportion food.

The immediate family (excluding uncle) were at my parents house and I’d just made food for everyone. Just as I was serving up - my uncle rocks up. I said to my other half no issue I’ll halve our portions - at this time a huge stainless steel pan that was on a high shelf ( not touched during cooking) literally flew from the rack and landed on the tile floor. Then all the lights in the kitchen went off.

At the time I clocked the link of the event and the history around my uncle - but just put it down to a series of coincidences.

After dinner I went home and was sat on the sofa with my other half.

As we sat there talking about my mum and where she was (my other half deeply religious saying she was in a better place - me saying she’s gone and I’ll never see her again) one cat bolted out of the kitchen and outside. The other cat that was sat around my feet - suddenly got up and looked over to the door and started hissing and making that horrible low pitched sound - but then started to back away slowly and then hide under the sofa and would not come out for anything and had it’s eyes as wide as saucers set on the door.

Thought okay this is weird - turn the tv on and take your mind off it. So switched on the tv and it turned on to Star Trek next generation - to a weird monologue from a character saying “you don’t need to worry about them, they’ve moved onto a better place and are happy”

Obviously then thought okay this is really weird. One incident maybe a coincidence, but 3 instances in the same night is probably beyond chance

This caused a lot of upset in the family at the time - as the majority are quite religious whereas I’m definitively not. One of my brothers was upset that he had never experienced anything like this despite attending church regularly - and I should take it as a sign to “connect”.

It did make me question a few of my core tenants - if I experienced this, and it wasn’t mere coincidence would I believe in ghosts ? If I did where would that put my non belief in god and an afterlife? The two surely go hand in hand.

I still don’t believe in god or an afterlife - but what happened that night I still can’t totally rationalise with my scientific brain.

A friend had house which was built near to the jail in Knutsford, closed down in the 1930s. He sold the house because he never felt comfortable in it and there was one room that was always icy cold, even though the radiator was really hot and no draughts. It was so bad he didn't use it. Sold the house a year ago, New owners wrote to him and said that a parcel had arrived at the house, would he pick it up. He went round and they asked him about the cold living room, he lied basically.

They had brought in a vicar who did his stuff and said that he felt a spirit of someone. After that the room was fine.

There's really nothing there that can't be put down to coincidence. As you say, you were likely extra sensitive at the time, but a falling pan, nervous cat, and randomly relevent bit of TV dialogue are pretty much the definition of coincidence.

Again, there will be a logical explanation here, and it won't be a clergyman spreading some special water around.

We live in the house my wife grew up in.

Now for the record I do not believe in ghosts and am also an atheist. So genuinely have no issue with the spooky world as it doesn't exist.

There are however a few areas of the house that due to construction etc are creaky and do frankly feel a bit odd if you are in the house alone, overactive imagination, shadows etc etc...

A few years ago I mention this casually to my wife who looks startled and says 'I thought it was just me'. Apparently growing up she often felt a presence and would as a child say in a loud voice 'go away you are scaring me' and this worked. I looked at her a bit funny and we laughed about it.

Last year my 7 year old daughter calmly announced that she was okay to now sleep with the lights off because the spirit in the house is kind.

I'm not saying that I believe, but it's all a bit X-Files!

House is built on an old well and a barn, what could possibly go wrong.

Our brand new transit van conked out at exactly 666 miles at a crossroads where they used to hang witches.

As we rolled to a stop (right next to the exact place the big post/gallows or whatever used to be) a grandfather clock we had in the back managed to fall over despite being well tied in with proper furniture ties.

The glass in the clock hood broke. We tied the clock back in and the van started up and we drove off. Never had another bit of trouble with the van or stuff randomly untying itself since.

So the witches evil presence, constantly on the lookout for the mark of the beast, was able to detect that your van was approaching 666 miles and all that they did was stop the engine and untie your clock?

You were very lucky that they didn't fly after you on their broomsticks, impale you with a lighting rod or slice your head off with a sheet of glass or something.

Sounds like a narrow escape to me and thanks for the heads up. I shall from now on avoid gallows, Indian burial grounds and the like if there is a 6 on my trip recorder, just in case.

This is typical of the worst of posts on PH, what they do not understand they deny its existence, I see it time and time again.

I have been in the room in question, indeniably cold despite a large and very hot radiator, modern double glazed windows, good carpet. The only cold room in the house.

People can make their own mind up.

Agree. Too many dismiss things out of hand, and think that's that.

My parents had a similar experience. One room was icy cold whatever heat was applied. She asked the local vicar to call in, he prayed in the room and said the Lords Prayer.

My mother said that she could feel that the room became warm very quickly after that.
