Rough pub stories
Discussion
A, now derelict, South Manchester pub that was frequented by quite scally looking lads, a few years back. A couple of friends and I had nipped in for a pint before last orders, as it was near one friend's house.
Upon a fight breaking out and it spilling outside, we were surprised to see a woman throwing what appeared to be fairly solid punches into a man, who was quite overwhelmed by the onslaught. When the fight had been broken up the lady ran into the pub and behind the bar.
We supped up and left.
It turned out that the pugilisitic woman was the pub landlady and had formerly been the landlord.
It closed down fairly soon afterwards.

No knowledge of the place, but reminded me of a pic I saw a while ago of The Windmill pub in Kirby from 1980:
Looks inviting!
My nan had a pub in Liverpool in the 80's and used to own Alsatians who used to go up to the roof quite often. I'll have to ask if she remembers the name as it could well be hers!Looks inviting!
There used to be a proper bikers pub in Bracknell near Princess Square? Anyone remember that one? I used to be a regular on a Saturday night after working in Dixons aged 15 in 85/6.
Also visited a place near/behind? the Old Vic several times. Can;t believe I got served on school trips at 14!!!
Forgot to add the half hour I spent under a settle behind several strangers with my snakebite hiding me during a raid in the bracknell one and the stabbings at the one in Crown Hill??

As a young Building Control Officer in the early 80s we had to inspect licenced premises to check condition, means of escape and so on in relation to licence renewals.
At that time the area I covered ran from Stratford down through Plaistow to Silvertown and North Woolwich. Feck me there were some rough pubs down the back streets. Proper dodgy places for a young chap from the Council to turn up at. Never once was there an issue though. Join in a bit of banter and on to the next one. Very easy to accept the proffered drinks though and be pissed by 11:00 am.
The Tidal Basin Tavern in Silvertown though.......definitely not somewhere to linger in.
I was working on the DLR back in the late nineties, we had digs in the Royal Standard just up from the Woolwich Ferry, proper cockney dive.At that time the area I covered ran from Stratford down through Plaistow to Silvertown and North Woolwich. Walking past a dodgy looking pub in a rough part of Portsmouth one Sunday at midday.
It had those swingy saloon doors; someone walked out and as the door swung back and forth I caught the distinct sight of an old woman sat at the bar with a pair of knickers pulled onto her head like a hat.

Portsmouth is good for drinking. So I might have been in that one at some point. It had those swingy saloon doors; someone walked out and as the door swung back and forth I caught the distinct sight of an old woman sat at the bar with a pair of knickers pulled onto her head like a hat.

Used to go in one near the Manchester City ground, it only opened on match days and was proper rough.
Cant remember the name though.
Maine Road. Cant remember the name though.
I think the last flat roofed pub I went in (outside of Scotland) was near Maine Rd on a match day.
