It's not worth the effort making sense of illogical sayings, I've yet to see
someone's face resemble an arse let alone a smacked arse.
Ditto the back of a bus.

There's also the expression 'still waters run deep'. Still waters don't run anywhere.

Likewise, the knees of bees aren't really that great, and neither are canine testicles. wink

Having said that, I do find the expression "A face like a bulldog licking ps off a nettle" to be pleasingly descriptive.

"A face like a bulldog chewing a wasp"
This is the apt phrase I have heard many times

Why the fk has my Youtube feed suddenly filled up with people playing fking bagpipes ?

And no, I haven't watched a bagpipe video recently...apart for this one perhaps, a few years ago... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXm8JdC4k4c ( no prizes for guessing why wink )

And when you run someone through with a sword you don't actually run through them. Anyway the proverb you mention may have a slightly different meaning in its original Latin.

My dear old mum used to say someone was "belting along" when driving fast.

Is this a common expression, I've only heard her use it. And if a common term, where does it come from?

Not sure if it is common or where it comes from, but it’s a phrase I’ve used in the past. eg “The police were belting along the motorway after a black bmw…”

Very common phrase around here. Total guess time:

A belt is a whip (or a hit), and belting is what coachmen did to their horses to get them to go faster.

I would imagine it comes from taking your belt off to use to whip a horse or animal of burden into action back in the old days.

Belting = racing.

'A face for radio', is also appropriate.

CC. I'm shocked. Bed wrong and side spring to mind.
This made one come to mind, where does the phrase 'got out of bed the wrong side' come from? Surely, as long as your bed isn't pressed up against a wall it doesn't matter which sodding side you get out of it from?
It was common to sleep in separate beds many years ago, so yes it's entirely possible getting out of the wrong side against a wall wouldn't be a great way to start the day.

It'll be my fault i'm afraid, i've just discovered The Red Hot Chilli Pipers (do Avicii) and think it's great.

I know this has been covered before, either in this thread or elsewhere on PH. And I can't claim I've always wanted to know the answer. However can someone explain in terms that this idiot would understand why PH close threads after 500 pages* and re-open another new thread? What's the technical difference (in simple terms) between 1 x 1,000 page thread and 2 x 500 pages?

*Other forum views are available, but the point holds

It's probably a limitation of the home-grown cobbled-together frankensoftware that runs the Gassing Station. Whether it be a hard limit, or just a case that really huge threads load more slowly or create a greater system load or something.

Whatever the reason, it's clearly a workaround that has been shown to be beneficial otherwise they wouldn't bother.

Because we wouldn’t have have the “volume tennish” joke without such a limit.

Seems so obvious now! Thanks for telling me the answer to something I didn't always want to know until I saw the answer!

To keep to the thread topic...

It is said that confidence is attractive, but what if you don't feel attractive enough to be confident? confused
